Signed lower right 'Engel' for Irma Engel Grabhorn (American, 1908-2003) and painted circa 1955. Born in Badenweiler, Irma Leisinger first studied in Paris with Andre Lhote from 1926. In 1930, she entered the Berlin Academy and continued her studies with Carl Hofer. With her first husband, Samuel Engel, she settled in San Francisco in 1939 and, after his death, married the fine arts printer, Edward Grabhorn. She was the recipient of numerous prizes, medals and juried awards and exhibited internationally with success including at the Salon d'Automne (Paris), 1926; Berlin; NY World's Fair, 1939; Golden Gate International Exposition, 1939; San Francisco Museum of Art, 1939 (solo); the De Young Museum, 1945, 1946 (solos); and at Gump's in San Francisco. A prolific artist, she produced over 600 floral still-lives, portraits and landscapes in her lyrical fusion of Expressionism and Post-Impressionism. She was member of the San Francisco Art Association and the Association of San Francisco Women Artists and her work is held in public and private collections including the permanent collections of the Karlsruhe Landesmuseum and the San Francisco Museum of Fine Arts.     Signed lower right, 'A. Minewski' for Alexander Minewski (American, 1917-1979) and painted circa 1950. Born in Detroit, Alexander Minewski left home at the age of 14 to work in the circus. He subsequently worked as a sign painter and a logger. Minewski first studied at the Society of Arts and Crafts in Detroit (1936-1939) and received scholarships that allowed him to attend the Art Students League in New York City (1939-1942). There, he studied under artists including Jean Charlot, Ernest Fiene, George Grosz and Vaclav Vytlacil. During World War II, Minewski joined the army and fought as a combat engineer. Wounded in Burma while fighting with Merrill's Marauders, he spent two years there recovering from his wounds. Following his time in Burma, Minewski studied for two years on the G.I. Bill in Paris at the Académie de la Grande Chaumiere (1950-1952) and, independently, with Hans Hofmann in New York City (1952-1953). Hofmann was influential on his style and his work shifted away from a moody realism towards a fuller expressionism. Artist: Philippe Marie René Picard (French, 1915-1997) Title: Flowers & Fruits in a Window Medium: Oil on canvas Size: 21 x 32 inches (54 x 82 cm) Philippe Marie René Picard was born in the small village of Neuvy-le-Roi in France. His parents were Albert Picard and Marie Lehoux; he had a total of six siblings. After studying at the Lycée Descartes in Tours, he entered the studio of the artist François Sicard. He was then accepted to the École supérieure des beaux-arts de Tours from 1932 to 1934, where he was a pupil of Maurice Mathurin. In 1935, he entered the School of Fine Arts in Paris, then in 1936-1938 the studio of Fernand Sabatté, and finally Charles-François-Prosper Guérin studio. Phillippe Marie exhibited at the Salon des Indépendants 1945, where the city of Paris bought the first painting. He then exhibited regularly at the Salon des Indépendants until 1989. In 1946 when this painting was created, he exhibited for the first time in Stockholm. At the end of the same year, he was noticed by Youki Desnos and exhibit at the Fontan gallery in Paris. In 1947 and 1948, he participated in a group exhibition at the Marquié Gallery in New York under the title: School of Paris - Paintings with Eugène Boudin , Jean-Baptiste Corot , Braque , Andre Lhote , Élisée Maclet , Camille Pissarro and Henri Rousseau. He travelled to Sweden from October to November 1949. It will be his only trip abroad. Subsequently, he made several important exhibitions in Sweden.
