Jahn Page
Okay Bouquet No 2 - soft, contemporary, still life, acrylic and oil on canvas

2022

About the Item

At once classic and contemporary, this painting by Jahn Page is part of a series dedicated to ‘an examination of life through the filter of flowers.’ On a tondo (circular canvas) a finely detailed plastic white swan becomes the centrepiece for a wild floral arrangement of sunny yellow flowers and grasses. A single jet-black marking—one of Page’s signature ‘Positive Gestures’ is intended to mimic the graceful curve of the swan’s head. “This is a lawn ornament a few doors down from my daughter’s daycare and it had wildflowers amongst it. The position of the Positive Gesture in this piece acts as a continuation of the void on the back of the planter.” Jahn Page Born in Richmond, Virginia in 1981, Jahn studied BFA in Painting and Printmaking from Virginia Commonwealth University and BFA in Studio Arts from George Mason University (Incomplete degrees). He has exhibited in both the US and Canada. In 2023, he won the 2023 DeSerres Artist Prize in Toronto. Having worked as a successful commercial artist for years, Jahn’s portfolio includes sculpture, painting and graphic design. He has installed major works in Toronto, Calgary, Ottawa, Dubai and Abu Dhabi. He opened Good Grief Studio in 2020.

A milky substance with a sweet scent found in the castor glands of beavers, castoreum was once used to create artificial vanilla, strawberry and raspberry flavoring until it's own collection process became unsustainable. Today, ethyl methylphenylglycidate, commonly known as strawberry aldehyde, is a chemical compound used in the flavor industry in artificial fruit...

  • When I Was Younger - Minimalist Scenic Still Life Flowers in a Vase Painting
    By Mike Gough
    Located in Los Angeles, CA
Gough’s interest in the elusive quality of memory has always been an invariable interest in his art practice. Rooted in memories of his upbringing in Newfoundland, Gough’s paintings are autobiographical but carry universal narratives. In the absence of detail there is an opportunity for one’s own memories to develop. An expansive solitude and sense of isolation is met with a universal feeling of what it means to belong. This unique 16 inch square mixed media painting on panel explores our relationship with memory and the natural world. This piece is signed by the artist on the back and is wired and ready to hang. The sides are painted and the artwork does not require framing. Free local Los Angeles area delivery. Affordable Continental U.S. and international shipping available. This artwork comes with a certificate of authenticity issued by the art gallery. At its core, his practice explores how our relationship with the natural world connects and defines us. Working in mixed media, he endeavors to create familiar meditative spaces that exhibit a personal journey, but simultaneously invite the viewer to insert themselves in the narrative. These paintings partially stem from a fear of memory loss as a result of experiences with Alzheimer’s in his family. Not only does the painting process exercise Gough’s memory, but the paintings themselves act as records of his experience becoming a blend of reality and idealism. They are not painted from photographs; the places are not precisely rendered and the experiences are not accurately told, but they are Gough’s authentic recollection of them. The intent of his work is to create a patchwork map of memories as a guide back to the authenticity of human feeling. Earth, air, water, and fire are the center subjects of my art. I live in New York City-it is close to the ocean, and I’ve developed a deep affinity for the sea, which has also evoked sentiments in me for what has across on the other side of the ocean. Majestic mountains in Europe and the U.S. those I’ve seen with spectacular ridgelines or forms are what I want to pay homage to. The sky’s ever-changing atmosphere, fire’s brilliance, and all the energies embodied in nature are the most things that I am in awe of. —- Leigh Wen
