Jill Pottle
"Dish Disarray", still life, retro, high chroma, bold patterns, oil painting

2017

About the Item

Jill Pottle’s still life titled “Dish Disarray” is part of a continuing series since 2014 titled “Epic Still Life.” In this personal creation, 36 X 36 inch oil painting on stretched canvas, she uses fragments of broken and well-loved “retro” objects, tossed in a box. These collections of objects can be found in our attics and basements. She uses natural and artificial light to set the stage her subject. She uses bold patterns and high chroma to create movement in the composition. The canvas has a cleanly painted side edges, is ready to hang. Known for her complicated and engaging still life and loose plein air work, Jill Pottle is a New Realist painter from Worcester County. Her aim is to capture movement and emotional qualities in her canvases. In her still life paintings, she most often uses retro or well-worn ordinary objects that focus attention on life in our contemporary world. In her landscapes, she freezes a moment in time to exemplify the power of the life force in nature. Rich brush work and high chroma characterize her fluid painterly style in both areas of subject matter. The play of light on different surfaces and the layering of paint create depth and resonance in her work. Pottle is represented by Fountain Street Gallery in Boston, MA.

    By Samantha Van Heest
    Located in Oslo, NO
This painting was inspired by the artists very first toy, a small blue giraffe, given to her as a day-old baby. It is something that has been around her whole life, and even though it is inanimate, there is a feeling of personification through the years of wear. Her brother as a baby would call giraffes “fa,” which is always a sweet memory she associate with this toy. Samantha Van Heest...
