About

Using finely tuned compositional elements, controlled brushwork in oil, and earthy color, John McCormick creates contemporary works that synthesize romantic and classical impulses. Well known for his landscape work, McCormick offers work in a new vein with delightful still life paintings that exalt common objects. "Winter Pear" transforms a single pear into a luminous golden form. Dramatic lighting gives this winter fruit a glowing aura. Delicate green leaves stretch across the rich gray and black background. McCormick's brushwork invigorates the scene with texture and the masterful handling of the oil paint straddles the boundary between realism and impressionism. The artist's minimalist setting and glorification of common objects recalls the still life photographs of Edward Weston. "Winter Pear" is presented in a dark wood frame with small reveal between the painted panel and the frame moulding. John McCormick earned his Bachelor of Fine Arts at the University of the Pacific and twice received their Alumni Fellowship. He has been awarded numerous artist residencies, notably the Djerassi Foundation in 2008 and the Morris Graves Foundation in 2004. He has exhibited nationally in such cities as San Francisco, New York, Chicago, Charlotte and Miami, and internationally in Montreal and Moscow. In California he had solo museum exhibitions at San Jose Institute of Contemporary Art, The Triton Museum, and The Bolinas Museum, the latter two of which hold his work in their collections. John McCormick’s work has been acquired by over 150 private and corporate collections including Stanford University and the Deutsche Bank in San Francisco, as well as SAFECO and Swedish Medical Center in Seattle. Harris Harvey Gallery, formerly the Lisa Harris Gallery, has represented him John McCormick since 2001. Image size: 12" x 12"
