About the Item

An elegant still-life of apricot-pink roses shown informally arranged in a plum-colored vase contrasted against a scumbled ivory and parchment background. Signed lower left 'Jon Blanchette' (1908-1987) and painted circa 1955. Jon Blanchette was born in Somerset, England in 1908 and immigrated to Battle Creek, Michigan in 1918. Artistically inclined from a young age, he first studied at the Pittsburgh Art Institute. In 1932, he moved to Los Angeles where he painted, undertook architectural design commissions, interior decorating, and stage sets for Fox Studios. In 1948, he abandoned commercial work and settled in Aptos, California where he focused on his fine art painting and gave private art lessons. During the summers of 1965-75 he held workshops in Mendocino. A romantic realist, he was primarily an oil painter but was proficient in multiple media including pen & ink, watercolor, and silk screen. Over the course of a long career, Blanchette exhibited widely and with success and was the recipient of numerous prizes, medals and juried awards. Dimensions: framed 15 X 19.5 sight 12 X 16 Janet Ament De La Roche (1916-2000) was active/lived in California. She is known for Post impressionist, abstract figurative painting. This painting while clearly figurative bears the influence of the emerging Abstract expressionist movement. Janet Ament De La Roche was born in Hollywood, CA on December 31, 1916. Janet first studied in Los Angeles at Otis and Chouinard art institutes. While studying at Jepson Art Institute in 1947, she met and soon married artist, Victor Di Gesu. Janet de La Roche was often called one of the last Bohemians. She was an artist as well as an avid Flamenco dancer. The couple spent four years in Europe and further studied in Paris at Académie de la Grande Chaumière and Andre Lhote Institute, and in Barcelona at Escuela de Bellas Artes de San Jorge .She also studied with the artist, Ejnar Hansen. as well as with Earl Kerkam, Yves Brayer, Jean Aujame, Edouard Goerg, F.Tolles Chamberlin and George Stanley. Upon returning to California in 1956, they settled on the Monterey Peninsula and built a home in Pacific Grove. She exhibited widely and with much success, including at the Salon d'Automne (1954), the Salon des Artes Decoratifs, Museum of Modern Art, Paris, (1955), the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art and the Los Angeles County Museum of Art. She was the winner of the Prix Othon Friesz.
