Louis Toncini
'Bouquet of Flowers' Still Life Oil Painting

1980

About the Item

'Bouquet of Flowers', oil on canvas, by Louis Toncini (1980). Painted towards the end of his career, this radiant bouquet of flowers belongs to that part of his body of work which was lighthearted, optimistic and pleasing. It is a captivating still life characterised by Toncini's vibrant colours and textured layers of oil paint deftly applied. The delicate magenta vase holds the flowers of Toncini's native Provence and serves as a love letter from the artist to the viewer. In good overall condition, it rests in its original frame with a French-style linen slip. The frame shows minor signs of wear and tear. The artwork is signed in the lower right hand and countersigned and dated (1980) on the canvas back. Please enjoy the many photos accompanying this listing. Upon request, a video of this piece will be provided. About the Artist: Louis Toncini (1907-2002), born in Marseille, France and was one of a group of artists who founded the 'peintres prolétariens', or later, the painters of the people. He painted the world of workers and depicted such subjects as factories, warehouses, train stations and working ports, etc. After the war his work took a more optimistic turn with paintings of still-lifes, bouquets and country landscapes. In 1936, along with fellow artists Antoine Serra, François Diana and Leon Cadenel, Toncini created the first organisation dedicated to the culture of his native Provence. His art is now exhibited in museums, galleries and private collections around the world and has been sold by major international auction houses. • Still Life with Pitcher

'Still Life with Pitcher', oil on paper, by Charles Réal (circa 1950s). Still-lifes make voyeurs out of all of us. No matter the era to which they belong, they always give us the sense that we’re spying on a table set for a night of gluttony or perhaps, romance. Whatever is set on the still-life table can transport us to another place limited only by our imaginations. What is not well known is that those tabletop items often had coded meanings. The secret meanings behind the paintings and their unofficial language spawned several sub-genres, including floral still life, breakfast paintings...
