Mary Chaplin
Impending Summer Storm, Original paintings, Floral, Spring, Abstract

2018

About the Item

Mary Chaplin, Impending summer storm, diptych (2x100x81cm) acrylic on linen canvas. Poppy fields are a real source of inspiration for me. Rather than just painting a wild flower field, I was more interested in capturing the feeling of the atmosphere getting heavy and far away the sky becoming darker announcing the storm to come. The strong blue sky gives power to the red of the poppies. More than a figurative representation, through this painting I wanted to illustrate the abstract feelings the scene aroused. This painting is not framed but ready to be hung. In a picturesque market town near the famous Etretat, birth place of Impressionism. Mary Chaplin for more than twenty years has worked as a self-taught professional artist, always inspired by nature and by the varying effects of light. Mary Chaplin is an AKOUN rated artist. She started her career by painting figurative scenes she saw around her in the French countryside. Her first artworks were representations of landscapes, gardens, forests, rivers or lakes, which allowed her to explore different techniques, including pastel, oil, acrylic and watercolor. However, both her life and career reached a turning point in 2005 when she witnessed the ‘holy light’ in a chapel she was visiting; she was deeply touched and inspired by the beauty of the reflections coming from the stained-glass windows, and thus she started painting them, calling them her ‘reflections’, or, in French, ‘méditations’. After that experience in the chapel, her will to convey the ephemeral nature of the light she captures, and its soothing warmth, became stronger. This new artistic birth enabled her to follow new paths in which she explores light’s numerous and ever changing facets. This deeply influenced her artistic style and work as it gave them a new dimension, shifting from a figurative representation of light in landscapes and still life to an abstract and more personal and metaphorical interpretation and appropriation of light’s fugacity. The artist’s work spans impressionism to abstraction: Hints of Monet and a sprinkling of Joan Mitchell. But over the years she has built her own distinctive style. Since her beginnings, artist and painter Mary Chaplin’s work has been published in several article in the press and in specialized art magazines. It also has been broadcasted on television and is regularly exhibited in festivals dedicated to sacred art as well as in art galleries throughout different countries, including France, Belgium and England.

Incredible Edible Flower Cake, Bright Still Life Food Art, Contemporary Pop Art
Located in Deddington, GB
A joyful depiction of a towering celebration cake decorated in edible wild flowers. This painting has a great deal of texture, vibrancy and character. Kerry Louise Bennett, artist and painter, has original artworks available with Wychwood Art in our gallery and online. Working from her home studio in Sheffield, Kerry Louise Bennett (b.1972) makes colourful paintings loaded with texture and pattern. Her previous lives working in set design, upholstery and photography, and her passion for music and literature, all feed into the semi-abstract interior and still life compositions she paints. In one sense the objects painted and the relationships between them can be seen as arbitrary, necessary only to serve a sense of spatial orchestration, and the abstract sensibility of a process-led artist, however, an element of romance and storytelling always seems to emerge in her charming characterful paintings. Colour and composition, strong mark-making and the pure materiality of paint drive my creative practice, but of course everything I make reveals something of me - the introvert, the observer, the dreamer. I work over multiple layers before finding the story the painting wants to tell. In some ways I feel like the conductor of an unruly orchestra - there is a musicality to my work, and my visual vocabulary draws on the everyday to capture a kind of unconscious narrative that transforms chaos into calm, worry into joy, the mundane to the magical. Kerry says of herself: I am obsessed with colour first and foremost – it’s impact is so visceral, but mark making is also important – usually expressed through pattern and the shapes of things often scratched into the surface of the paint, with textures then built up over many layers. My visual vocabulary draws on the ordinary stuff of life - chairs, plants...

Throwing Some Shapes I, II, III Triptych, Original Naïve Still Life Painting
Located in Deddington, GB
A series of paintings exploring the dynamic and expressive shapes of pot plants. I love the way that nature expresses itself; plants often remind me of dancers, but being rooted in solid earth or a heavy pot their 'moves' seem to express an un-self-conscious celebration of life, and a contented acceptance of their earthbound limitations.
