About the Item
A light and airy, inviting outdoor scene with a still life arrangement of peach flowers in a pink and white patterned vase next to a painted fruit bowl and blue patterned tea cup, alluding to the peaceful moment of an afternoon with tea. To the right, another fruit bowl holds green and brown pears next to a tall floral patterned vase with another peach bouquet and a purple patterned bowl off to the side. The background gives a view of the serene landscape, four tall trees with dark green leaves and a figurative statue. Signed on recto, lower right corner, signed, titled and dated on verso.
Pastoral and bucolic still life settings emerge from Melanie Parke's life. The artist reconstructs familiar interiors and filters them through the ideology of memory. Her subjects often center on flowers, birds, decorative objects, gardens and domestic settings with an intent in creating safe places for pleasure. Parke utilizes sentiment to craft a domestic locus and seek visual lushness by alternating tonal moods and vivid ornamentation.

I followed and progressed through gesture, organic and finally, geometric non-objective painting. The radical move for me was to discover that the real world of landscape lurked behind all that past work. My childhood in the mountains of Pennsylvania pervaded my “way of seeing” and I wanted to investigate and celebrate the infinite variety of tone, color and composition that I found around me. Sky, the structure of trees, mist and water appeared to fill a hunger to look again and again.
