Michael Frary (1918 - 2005) Austin Artist Image Size: 16 x 20 Frame Size: 17.5 x 21.5 Medium: Oil "Still Life Fruit" Biography Michael Frary (1918 - 2005) Michael Frary was born in Santa Monica, California on May 28, 1918, and died on Tuesday, August 30, 2005. During a career spanning almost seventy years, Michael Frary influenced the course of art, not only in Texas, but in the United States as well. He was a seminal figure in the art movement known as modernism and with his contemporaries on the faculty of the Art Department at the University of Texas, he changed the face of art on a national scale. Now widely celebrated as a Texas Modernist, his influence has also shaped the lives and careers of the countless thousands of students whom he taught both in a classroom setting and through hundreds of watercolor seminars and workshops throughout the southwest. His father died when Michael was six months old. Relatives from the east moved Michael, his mother and siblings from California to Florida. He graduated from Palm Beach High School in 1934 and returned to California where he accepted a swimming scholarship from the University of Southern California. During his time at USC, he became a champion swimmer and captain of the USC varsity water polo team. Despite a high school football injury that resulted in a broken neck, he received eight letters, which at that time was the maximum number possible. In 1940, he graduated with a Bachelor of Architecture Degree, and a Master of Fine Arts in painting the following year. At the outbreak of World War II, Michael joined the United States Navy, eventually receiving his discharge as Lieutenant at the war's conclusion in 1945. Upon his return to California, he became assistant art director first for the Goldwyn Studios, Paramount, and then finally Universal Studios. His hectic lifestyle, although glamorous, did not allow him enough time to pursue his love of painting. To fulfill this need Michael began teaching night classes in painting. Shortly thereafter UCLA offered a full-time teaching position, and he made a permanent break from art director to painting instructor. During his teaching career in California, Michael also taught at Los Angeles City College and the Chouinard Art Institute in Los Angeles. In 1949, Michael moved to Texas to serve as the artist in residence and faculty chairman for the irrepressible Marion Koogler McNay in San Antonio. He taught at her burgeoning art school for several seasons. It was during this time in San Antonio that he met Peggy Mattewson who he married in 1951. In 1955, he accepted a teaching position as assistant professor with the University of Texas at Austin, which named him Professor of Art in 1970 and upon his retirement from teaching in 1986 he was named Professor Emeritus of Art. His artwork and love for the state in which he lived for more than half a century resulted in the publication of three books: Impressions of the Big Thicket, University of Texas Press, 1973; Impressions of the Texas Panhandle, Texas A&M University Press, 1977; and Watercolors of the Rio Grande, Texas A&M University Press, 1984. Through his writing and watercolors, these books vividly convey the breadth and scope of the land that provided his inspiration. In pursuit of this inspiration he and his wife, Peggy also traveled across the United States, South America, South Africa, England, Mexico, Italy, and France. During his career, Michael received over one hundred seventy-five awards and purchase prizes and earned over 200 one-man exhibitions. His works are housed in hundreds of private and public collections worldwide including the National Museum of American Art, Smithsonian Institute, Washington, S.C., the Los Angeles County Museum, the Santa Barbara Museum of Art, Santa Barbara, California, the Virginia Scott Museum, Pasadena, California. The Springfield Museum of Art, Springfield, Missouri, the Virginia Museum of Art, Richmond, Virginia, the Phillips Petroleum Building, Bartlesville, the Dallas Museum of Fine Arts, the Panhandle Plains Museum, Canyon, Texas, Museum of the Big Bend, Alpine, Texas, the Amarillo Art Center, Amarillo, Texas the McNay Museum, San Antonio, Texas, the Texas instruments Collection, Dallas, Texas, the Austin Museum of Art, and the University of Texas at Austin. He also received many important commissions, which included, among others, the selection of his painting, "Antelope Country" by the National Gallery for presentation by President and Mrs. Lyndon B. Johnson to the New Zealand Prime Minister and his wife at the Manila Conference. He was also commissioned in 1972 by the U.S. Department of Interior to paint at reclamation sites in four states, resulting in four of his painting being shown at an exhibition at the National Gallery, Washington, D.C. In 1974 the Austin Chapter of the American Institute of Architects awarded him the Medal of Honor and the Texas Society of Architects presented him with the Citation of Honor, both in recognition of his book Impressions of The Big Thicket. In 1978, he was commissioned to paint the Psyche Prize for the Fourth Biennial International Film Festival of Canada.     Emma Richardson Cherry (1859 - 1954) Houston Artist Size: 20 x 16 Frame: 22.5 x 18.5 Medium: Oil on Board "Magnolias" Biography Emma Richardson Cherry (1859 - 1954) Emma Richardson Cherry, known as the "Dean of Houston Art," is credited with introducing many Houstonians to fine art. Emma Richardson was born in Aurora, Illinois in 1860. She was recognized as an artist by the age of 18. She met her husband, Dillon Brooke Cherry, while teaching art in Nebraska. Mrs. Cherry studied in New York, Paris, and Italy before moving to Houston in 1892. Cherry began teaching art in her home, and continued to do so for half a century. Cherry organized the Houston Public School Art League* in 1900 with four other art advocates: Mrs. Robert S. Lovett, Miss Lydia Adkisson, Miss Roberta Lavender and Miss Cara Redwood. The group would obtain examples of fine art masterpieces and bring them to the schools. One attempt was not favorably received- a replica plaster of Paris nude Venus de Milo was offered to Central High School; the School Board thought it would corrupt students morals and refused to accept it. The League gave the statue to the public library instead (today it can be seen on the second floor of the Julia Ideson Building). According to one newspaper account, parents would warn their children: "You may go down to the library, my dears, but don't go near that Venus." (Houston Post 4-12-1953) The independent spirit was recognized in a 1923 Houston Chroniclearticle: "Mrs. Cherry's work has always been characterized by an independent spirit and forward-looking attitude." In 1913, the group she had organized shortened their name to the Houston Art League*, setting its sights on raising money to open a fine arts museum in the city. The Museum of Fine Arts, Houston opened in 1924. Emma Richardson Cherry was the first woman to have a solo exhibit at the museum. Cherry worked in oil, watercolors, pastels, pencil and charcoal, and considered herself a modernist, but she painted a number of traditional portraits while living in Houston. She is known for her paintings of flowers, and in 1937 did a study of oleanders to be presented to President Franklin Roosevelt during his visit to Galveston.     effrey Long, the elder son of a commercial graphic artist at Time & Life, was born in New York City in 1948. In 1970 Long received a BFA in Illustration and Art Education from Rhode Island School of Design and had decided to be a painter. His paintings from this period were photo realistic portraits and figures set in landscapes. On graduation, he married and began teaching art in a Rhode Island public school system. From 1971 through 1973 he was a resident artist at the Rockefeller-funded Pulpit Rock Community in Woodstock, Connecticut. Works from this intensive period were representational, highly dynamic, and borrowed from the vocabulary of cartoons.     "Squares and Things" painted by the eminent artist, Charles McGee, literally breaths his African American heritage and his extraordinary vibrant use of colors. Provenance is The Arwin Galleries on Grand River in Detroit, Michigan - label on verso. This early painting of McGee's shows his mastery in creating a painting in the style of the French Impressionist Edouard Manet, "Still Life with Melon and Peaches" located in the National Gallery of Art, Washington, DC, and in the style of Fauvist/Expressionist painter Henry Matisse, "Still Life with Blue Tablecloth", located in the Hermitage Museum, Saint Petersburg, Russia. McGee makes the well-known genre of still life his own creating an exciting marvelous work incorporating the homely quilt - the powerful symbol of the African American road to safety from slavery - as his main focus. Quilts symbolize warmth, comfort, and as shown by the collection of quilts gathered by the artists in Gee's Bend the designs on the quilts hung outdoors at locations along the Underground Railroad showed fugitives the road north and to safety. "Squares and Things" was first shown at The Arwin Galleries, Inc., Detroit, Michigan, one of the stops along the Underground Railroad. This piece is signed by the artist, Charles McGee, and is an extraordinary example of his early work before he moved into Abstract Expressionism and his many sculptural works now located throughout Michigan. Several of these works are: "Noah's Ark: Genesis, 1984," on display at the Detroit Institute of Arts, his brilliant 2005 "Progression" a 45-foot wide aluminum sculpture at Beaumont Hospital, Royal Oak, Michigan, and his stunning 2016 "United We Stand" sculpture at the Charles H. Wright Museum of African American History . His genius can be seen in sculpture installments throughout the city of Detroit. . He was born into a family of sharecroppers. While helping his grandfather tend the land, "he observed firsthand the order and harmony that exists within nature." He had no formal schooling until moving to Detroit at age 10, where he found that "everything was on the move and it hasn’t slowed down yet." in 2017 he observed, "I learned something not being in school — because life is school . . .I learn something every time I move. Every time I go around a corner, something new is revealed to me.” McGee took advantage of the GI Bill to attend classes at the Society of Arts and Crafts, now the College for Creative Studies, Detroit, MI. Other College for Creative Studies (formerly Center for Creative Studies) faculty and graduates include Richard Jerzy, Harry Bertoia, Doug Chaing (currently director of Lucas Film), Stephen Dinehart (game maker, writer, designer connected with The David Lynch Foundation), Tyree Guyton (international artist), Herb Babcock, Jerome Feretti, Kevin Siembieda (writer, designer and publisher of role-playing games), Renee Radell, and Philip Pearlstein. After retiring from the Corps of Engineers, McGee spent 1968 studying art in Barcelona. Despite not knowing the language at the outset, he immersed himself in the culture and opened himself to a whole new range of experience that would play out in his artwork. "If you free yourself, you have this kind of opportunity to have those experiences, horizons, and new vistas." (per interview with Nick Sousanis author of a book on Charles McGee.)
