Signed lower right "Miles R. Hodson" (American, 1920-1997) and dated 1954.
A substantial, Post-Impressionist still-life showing a carafe and a bowl of fruit set on a table and contrasted against a variegated blue and yellow background. An elegant composition with bravura brushwork by this notable African American artist.
Miles Raymond Hodson attended the Herron School of Art in Indianapolis from which he received his BFA in 1947. He painted still-lives and abstracts with a decidedly mid-century aesthetic and was a member of the Hoosier Salon, a long standing artist collective known for offering one of the richest purses in the United States.
