PJ Linden
"Papaya Egg" Dimensional and acrylic paint on canvas, fruit motif

2009

About the Item

This piece titled "Papaya Egg" is an original artwork by PJ Linden and is made from acrylic, dimensional paint on canvas. This piece measures 48" x 24"w and is signed en verso. The direction of PJ Linden’s current practice took root in the aughts. She quickly became known for her abstract, often three-dimensional work, painting with machine-like precision, creating microscopic patterns on found objects, fashion, and technology. She also became known for her street art under the name Wonderpuss Octopus, taking her career in multiple directions that have all come together again over the years. Linden's work has caught the eye of celebrity clients including Beyonce, Miley Cyrus, Willow Smith, Kelly Osborne, and Solange Knowles. In this original egg series, Linden sparks the conversation of the beginning of life and the beginning of art through a story of unfertilized eggs, commenting on being a lesbian and not picturing a “common” journey for herself, adding a patterned background of tossed aside birth control. Inspired by a classification of crustacea, which reproduces asexually or produces eggs without the need for fertilization by a male, Linden aims to magnify present and future mutations. Born 1985 Bethlehem, Pennsylvania. PJ Linden is a New York City and Pennsylvania-based fine artist known for her abstract, three-dimensional work. She paints with machine-like precision, creating microscopic patterns on found objects, fashion, and technology. Linden got her start working with Patricia Field, creating custom, one-of-a-kind art and fashion under the name Wonderpuss Octopus. At Field's iconic, namesake boutique, Linden's work caught the eye of celebrity clients including Beyonce, Willow Smith, Kelly Osborne, and Solange Knowles. Linden has since collaborated with and created pieces for Miley Cyrus, KidRobot, Norma Kamali, The CFDA, Alife, Sharon Needles, Pearl Liaison, Samsung and Swarovski. Her work has been featured in The New York Times, New York Magazine, Marie Claire Italia, Culture Magazine, Plastik Magazine PAPER Magazine. She has shown alongside art heavyweights such as Andy Warhol, Shepard Fairey, and Kenny Scharf, and has exhibited at The Hole Gallery, The Bridgette Mayer Gallery, Reverse Space, Superchief Gallery, Art Basel Miami, The Museum of Sex, and The Museum of Ice Cream. She continues to work as an international muralist and resident artist for The House of Yes.

    By James Oliver
    Located in Philadelphia, PA
"Challenger" is an original painting on canvas by James Oliver measuring 40in x 60in. James Oliver is a painter whose precise visual language pushes the tradition of twentieth century abstraction into a contemporary context. Oliver is a conceptually driven formalist whose work is inspired by his dreams and emotional states, which he abstracts into an undetermined and subjective viewing experience by emphasizing line, color, and form. Even as Oliver turns to a figurative practice in recent series, rendering cultural icons like chopper bikes, Pontiac Firebirds, and his childhood poodle in detailed line drawings, these representations similarly evoke broadly accessible affects abstracted from his mental landscape. Born in Upstate New York, raised in San Juan, Puerto Rico, son of an advertising executive, Oliver was exposed from a young age to visual art from its most commercial applications to more visceral exponential lives. "The Challenger is a classic muscle car. Knowing that I have been working on a series of muscle car paintings...
