Scott Fraser
"Electric Dream", Oil Painting

2014

About

Scott Fraser's "Electric Dream" is an oil painting created in 2020 that depicts a green grasshopper resting on a pencil that has been stuck into a lemon which rests on a red anvil, all underneath a spider decoration and web. Artist's Notes about "Electric Dream": I have been captivated by Louise Bourgeois ever since I saw her piece titled Nature Study at the Whitney Museum back in the 1980s when I was fresh out of art school. I followed her career, seeing several of her shows, which is how I found myself standing under one of her giant spider sculptures a decade later. Here was an instant connection, since I love painting bugs and spiders. When composing Electric Dream, I chose to superimpose her face on to the head of the spider, since she was often referred to as “the spider woman”. Because of the painting’s narrow confines, I elongated the spider, adding a surreal aspect to the work. Her face is modeled after the portrait photograph taken by Robert Mapplethorpe in 1982. Although it is tiny in this context, it is an important tie-in to the rest of the composition and best seen in person, since it is so highly detailed. The web in the top corner references her passion for spiral designs, a device I have used in many of my works as well. This graphic visual punch is counterbalanced by the red anvil which adds necessary weight down below. Pulling the image together is the Katydid, delicately balanced and oblivious to the danger overhead. Electric Dream has three main focal points for the eye to travel between, each adding to the painting’s underlying tension. About the artist: Scott Fraser is a leading figure in twenty-first century realist painting, specializing in taking ordinary objects and composing them in extraordinary ways. Many adjectives have been used to describe his work: quirky, intense, humorous, thoughtful; but above all, there is a sense of the personal in his unique compositions. Fraser taps into a variety of influences, including art history, former teachers, friends and family. His work can be found in over 25 museum collections around the country including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Denver Art Museum, the Fine Arts Museums in San Francisco, and the Whitney Western Art Museum in the Buffalo Bill Center of the West, Cody WY.
