Uldis Zemzaris graduated from J. Rozentāls Riga Art High School (1953) and the Painting Department of the Latvian State Academy of Art (1955) with his diploma work "Rainis in Riga Jurmala" (supervisor E. Kalniņš).
He has been exhibiting since 1952.
The group exhibition was held in Riga (1958, together with O. Medi and R. Tillbergs).
Solo exhibitions in Riga (1961, 1964, 1976, 1980, 1988, 1998), Jurmala (1976), Tartu (1965), Moscow (1974), Sydney (1982), Ottawa (1984), Columbus (USA, 1990), New York, Boston (both 1991).
U. Zemzaris has been a member of the Artists' Union since 1957 and the Writers' Union since 1971.
Together with L. Koklis, he was the initiator of the establishment of the Young Artists Sector of the Artists' Union in 1957 and the founder of the Young Artists Exhibitions.
The artist's work is dominated by the principles of realistic art. He painted portraits characterised by heightened expression, an immersion in the model's personality and the presence of the artist's personal attitude. Zemzaris also created portraits in charcoal, ink and mixed media. Many of his portraits have the Latvian countryside or the sea in the background.
He has also turned to landscape and the marina, and his works are dominated by romantic motifs rich in mood and colour.
U. Zemzaris also painted still lifes.
After being introduced to abstract art at the 1957 World Festival of Youth and Students in Moscow, he also worked occasionally in the abstract style.
He has designed and illustrated books.
He has also worked with director P. Pētersons on stage designs for performances at the Dailes Theatre.
The artist is a Lifetime Fellow of the Culture Capital Foundation (1999).
The documentary film "Man enters the rainbow" (dir. A. Freimanis, 1962) was made about U. Zemzari.
