Saint Sebastian Angels Tanzio Da Varallo Paint Oil on canvas 17th Century Italy

1600-1650

About the Item

Saint Sebastian cured by angels Antonio d'Enrico, called Tanzio da Varallo (Alagna Valsesia, c. 1582 - Varallo, 1633) - circle of Oil on canvas 112 x 88 cm. - Framed 124 x 100 cm. We share a painting of great fascination and intensity, depicting an impassioned 'Penitent Saint Sebastian', which takes up the most beautiful work known to date by the brilliant 17th-century Lombard Tanzio da Varallo (Alagna Valsesia, c. 1582 - Varallo, 1633), now in the Kress Collections of the National Gallery of Art in Washington. The saint, persecuted as a Christian under Diocletian and condemned to death by the emperor himself, is here saved by two angels, after being attacked by the emperor's archers and pierced by numerous arrows. An alternative, and perhaps more plausible, reading would see in the figure holding him up behind him Saint Irene, who took care of the Saint after his martyrdom. It is a composition that gives a strong emotion, in perfect line with the dictates of the Counter-Reformation, which urged artists to create works capable of involving the faithful, who should therefore feel enraptured by the intense passions represented. And undoubtedly Tanzio da Varallo, with this work in particular, fully accepted this invitation, creating a painting of extraordinary emotional charge, with Sebastian in ecstasy. Observing these works, however, with the eyes and critical spirit of the contemporary observer, the emotions aroused are not exactly what they were aiming for, where the beauty of the body of the young soldier condemned to death by Diocletian stands out in the work. In fact, looking at our work - which we can well juxtapose with two others by the master, namely David with the Head of Goliath (Varallo, Pinacoteca) and St. John the Baptist in the Desert (Tulsa, Philbrook Museum of Art) - we see the image of a young man of great beauty (instead of the canonical mature man bearded and worn out by the harsh experience of the desert) with those dreamy eyes and blond curls, with a powerful build that seems unaffected by the wear and tear inflicted, and indeed in a pose in which every part of the body seems to radiate vitality and energy. The structure of the painting, as well as the gestural and expressive charge it conveys and the intense emotional participation and pain of the characters are borrowed from a careful study of Caravaggio's art. In 1600, in his early twenties, Tanzio da Varallo moved to Rome, being thunderstruck by the new language adopted by the great master. When, fifteen years later, he returned to Lombardy, his eyes were filled with his painting, an influence that was to accompany him throughout his successful production, which is also reflected in the St. Sebastian by the Angels in Washington. With regard to our beautiful version, we are inclined to attribute it to a 17th century author, active in the circle of Tanzio da Varallo, presumably in Lombardy. Good condition. ADDITIONAL INFORMATION: The painting is sold complete with a nice gilded frame and is accompanied by a certificate of authenticity and descriptive iconographic card. Portrait Philip V King Rigaud Paint Oil on canvas 17/18th Century Old master Art
Located in Riva del Garda, IT
Hyacinthe Rigaud (Perpignan 1659 - Paris 1743) Circle Portrait of Philip V, King of Spain (Versailles 1683 - Madrid 1746) Oil on canvas 72 x 59 cm - framed 87 x 74 cm. The painting examined here, depicting King Philip V of Spain (Perpignan 1659 - Paris 1743), is to be placed in the circle of the painter Hyacinthe Rigaud (Perpignan 1659 - Paris 1743), one of the most significant portrait painters of his time and a great interpreter of the French school. This is a work of excellent pictorial quality: note the rendering of the facial features and the sharpness of the contours emphasised by the light. The face is characterised by chiaroscuro passages that verisimilarly reproduce light and its effects, rendered with great skill. Philip V wears a black satin costume with a sword at his side, he wears the stiff white Spanish collar and at the same time wears the blue sash of the Order of the Holy Spirit and the collar of the Habsburg Order of the Golden Fleece: this bringing together of the two main orders of France and Spain announced the possibility of a union between the two crowns. In Spanish costume, this effigy is nevertheless fully in line with the French tradition of ceremonial portraiture, also testifying to the renewal that Rigaud had brought about, particularly through the relationship between the character and the splendour of the decoration. The work is inspired, reworked in a reduced format to make it suitable for a private clientele, by the large painting that Rigaud made for the sovereign around 1700, today conserved in the Louvre, reproduced by the same workshop in numerous other versions. The account books...

Saint John Evangelist Paint Oil on canvas Old master 18th Century French School
Located in Riva del Garda, IT
Saint John the Evangelist French school of the eighteenth century Oil painting on canvas 82 x 64 cm. - in frame 102 x 84 cm. In this pleasant painting we see the portrait of the evangelist John, holding a pen in his hand while writing the pages of the Gospel, while behind him it is possible to recognize the profile of an eagle, his typical iconographic attribute. The graceful face, which still reveals the devout attitude, which gives the painting a more intimate and delicate, not excessive religiosity, is one of the typical characteristics for works intended for domestic devotion, as in the case of this Saint John. From the representation of the Saint the freshness of his features immediately stands out, he is in fact portrayed as young and handsome: and it is precisely this iconographic peculiarity that makes the work fascinating and very pleasant, probably commissioned for a private room. The painting presents the peculiarities of eighteenth-century French portraiture, characterized by a soft drawing and a wise use of light. The rather marked chiaroscuro and well-calibrated shades produce an excellent result thanks to the play of light on the face, highlighted by the dark background of the scene. The painting has been relined and is in an excellent state of conservation with the colors still bright and a very healthy pictorial layer. The painting is sold together with a nice golden frame. ADDITIONAL INFORMATION: The work is sold with a certificate of authenticity and a descriptive iconographic card. We take care and organize the transport of the purchased works, both for Italy and abroad, through professional and insured carriers. It is also possible to see the painting in the Riva del Garda...
