About the Item
An oil painting of a seascape at sunset. Tall, skinny, birch trees stretch across the foreground and up towards the sky. Behind them, a lustrous river, rippled with a current. Painted in a pointilist style in hues of pink, lilac, and green. A peninsula of land reaches from the right, and behind a horizon of dark trees are backlit by the golden sky above. Clouds float above in balls of rich purple, accentuated by pink highlights.
Framed in a flat black wood frame with a gold inner trim.
Painting dimensions: 35 x 43 inches
Framed dimensions: 41 x 49 inches
Viktor Butko has deepened his inquiry into the tonal shifts of light at twilight, especially as seen through trees. “Over the Pond, Evening Light” is a mid-winter examination of that theme, where Butko deftly inserts a screen of verticals in the form of light-colored birch trees to offset vertical landscape beyond. The trees also frame sections of his background, highlighting elements that might otherwise be lost, like the shimmering water, effectively painted by this well trained yet contemporary impressionist.
Artist Bio
Viktor Butko was born in 1978 in Moscow, into a family of artists. He often visited the studio of his grandfather, the famous artist Victor Chulovich, and watched the creation of paintings. As you may imagine, this has inspired him to start painting. Viktor’s first steps in art were directed by his grandfather and his parents, artists Nickolay Butko and Marina Chulovich, he then studied at the Moscow Art School, which is known for a high level of training. After completing his training at the art school, Butko painted at the Academic Dacha of Artists, created by the great Russian artist Ilya Repin for students of the Academy of Fine Arts. There he worked under the guidance of famous artists Alexey Gritsay and Tkachev brothers, which had a big impact on his creativity.
Viktor’s first solo show was held in the United States, in 2002 at the McCarthey Gallery, one of the foremost dealers in the United States for Russian Impressionist art. This marked the beginning of a long cooperation with the gallery. Later, in 2016, He took part in an international plein air event, which was organized by American painter Ben Fenske and art dealer Laura Grenning. As a result of this Russian-American Painting Alliance a large exhibition was held in the Grenning Gallery in Sag Harbor. His work is in the Vyshniy Volochek Museum collection, Collection of the IRRA and private collections in Russia, China and the U.S. Butko regularly paints in Sag Harbor and Maine as well as Russia and Italy and is represented by the Grenning Gallery, gWatson Gallery, Williams Fine Art and the McCarthey Gallery. He lives with his wife, Kelly Carmody, in Waltham Massachusetts, where they paint and teach in and around their studio.
Older Russian impressionist artists, Alexei and Sergei Tkachev (they are brothers) claim Butko’s work is the ….next generation of greatness.

- Black Roses FuckBy Darius YektaiLocated in Sag Harbor, NYAbstract oil painting on canvas and resin. This moody piece has a lot of depth, literally! The layers of paint and resin are built upon each other, the upper layers casting shadows below. The glossy resin over the darker surface also creates a reflective surface. Just off of center is a brighter patch of cerulean emerging from the shades of black and dark grey. This piece can be hung horizontally or vertically. When hung vertically, the word "FUCK" can be read more easily at the bottom of the composition, when horizontal, the lines of the letters hide amongst the stems of the black roses...Category

- "Daniels Lane" contemporary oil on resin painting colorful modern farm landscapeBy Darius YektaiLocated in Sag Harbor, NYAn oil painting of a landscape in Sagaponack NY. Lines radiate across the canvas towards the bottom and right side of the canvas in shades of yellow, brown and orange, indicating rows of plants or tilled soil in a field. The field is surrounded by lush thick brush-stokes in shades of green flecked there and there with bright orange. The top fourth of the painting shows the sky, full of points of paint, most under the resin. The white dots above the resin cast shadows below, adding dimension to the piece. The two radiating lines that surround the lower righthand corner are also painted above the resin, one white and one a swirl of primary colors loosely mixed together. The raw white gessoed linen canvas is clearly visible between the precisely placed brush-strokes, all sealed under resin...Category
