Rare Hand Colored "Cabane Des Hold" - 1st Ed "Description de l’Univers" C. 1683
Located in Soquel, CA
Rare Engraving "Cabane Des Hold, Terres Artiques, Fig CII," 1st edition "Description de l’Univers, page 281 This rare image depicts the Willem Barentsz expedition of 1597 to Novaya Zemlya, Russia. The engraving, with later hand-coloring, shows the cabin and ship of the Dutch arctic expedition of Barentsz on Novaya Zemlya (Nova Zembla), with the party being attacked (and in some cases apparently eaten) by bears and wolves. Dutch explorer, Willem Barentsz, reached the west coast of Novaya Zemlya in 1594, and in a subsequent expedition of 1596 rounded the northern point and wintered on the northeast coast. Barentsz died during the expedition, and may have been buried on the northern island. This artwork is a page from a book by 17th century cartographer and engineer, Allain Manesson Mallet (French, 1630-1706), "Description de L'Univers, contenant les differents systêmes du monde, les cartes générals et particulières de la géographie ancienne et modern." Paris: Denys Thierry, 1683. Presented in an cream colored mat. Text on verso shown in images. Mat Size: 11.5"H x 9.07"W Paper Size: 8.25"H x 5.44"W Image Size: 5.63"H x 3.75"W Alain Manesson Mallet (French, 1630-1706) was a 17th century cartographer and military engineer. He started his career as a musketeer in the army of Louis XIV, became a Sergeant-Major in the artillery and an Inspector of Fortifications. He later served under Alfonso VI, King of Portugal...

Male and female portrait, both in silk kimono, possibly textile dealers
By Christoffel Lubieniecki
Located in Amsterdam, NL
CHRISTOFFEL LUBIENIECKI (1659-1729) Pair of portraits of a gentleman and a lady, both in silk kimono, before a country house (circa 1680) Indistinctly signed “C.......” on a box under the man’s left hand Oil on canvas, 79.5 x 67 cm each Both sitters are portrayed wearing a silk “Japanese” coat. During the second half of the seventeenth the Japanese silk coat, an adapted Japanese kimono, became a real vogue in the Dutch elite. The exclusive Dutch trade contacts with Japan can explain the popularity of the kimono-style silk coats in the Netherlands. Everybody who could afford one, dressed in such a fashionable and comfortable coat and, like the present sitters, some proud owners had themselves portrayed in a “Japanese” coat often together with an oriental carpet to underline their standing and international connections. These portraits are the work of the Polish-born portraitist Christoffel Lubieniecki (also known as Lubienitski, Lubinitski or Lubiniecki) Lubieniecki was first trained in Hamburg under Julian Stuhr and after 1675 in Amsterdam under Adriaen Backer and Gerard de Lairesse. He specialized in landscapes, generally of an Italianate character, and in portraits. The loving execution of these contented burghers, enjoying the garden vistas of their country house, places him alongside Amsterdam portraitists such as Constantijn Netscher and Michiel van Musscher...

Map of the North of Scotland 17th century hand-coloured map by Gerardus Mercator
Located in London, GB
Gerardus Mercator (1512 - 1594) Map of the North of Scotland (1683) Engraving with later hand colouring 35 x 45 cm A fantastically characterful and detailed map engraving of the North of Scotland from 1683. The highly detailed and beautifully coloured map is inscribed to the reverse with a description of the parts of Scotland illustrated, called the 'Troisieme Table d'Escosse'. The map comes from the 1683 French edition of Gerardus Mercator's Atlas Major, which was first published in 1585. Gerardus Mercator was the Flemish father of mapmaking. He was a skilled geographer, cosmographer and cartographer and is most renowned for creating the 1569 world map based on a new projection which represented sailing courses of constant bearing (rhumb lines) as straight lines - an innovation that is still employed in today's nautical charts. Mercator was a highly influential pioneer in the history of cartography and is generally considered one of the founders of the Netherlandish school of cartography and geography. He is also widely considered the most notable figure of the school. In his own day, he was a notable maker of globes and scientific instruments. In addition, he had interests in theology, philosophy, history, mathematics and geomagnetism. He was also an accomplished engraver and calligrapher. Unlike other great scholars of the age, he travelled little and his knowledge of geography came from his library of over a thousand books and maps, from his visitors and from his vast correspondence (in six languages) with other scholars, statesmen, travellers, merchants and seamen. Mercator's early maps were in large formats suitable for wall mounting but in the second half of his life, he produced over 100 new regional maps in a smaller format suitable for binding into his Atlas of 1595. This was the first appearance of the word Atlas in reference to a book of maps...

Portrait of Lady Tufton Wray (1667-1712), Antique oil on canvas painting, Large
Located in London, GB
This magnificent large-scale portrait, presented by Titan Fine Art, depicts Tufton Wray, later Lady Montagu, seated in a wooded area, resting her arm on a plinth next to a fountain, a warm evening sky in the background. Lady Wray was a paragon of the wealthy and privileged society that she belonged to – and her status is evident in the choice of her final resting place - the great Canterbury Cathedral. The portrait was painted circa 1685, when the sitter was around eighteen years old. Much of the attractiveness of this elegant large-scale portrait resides in the graceful composition and the beauty of the youthful sitter. Lady Wray is wearing a white satin dress with a pearl clasp on the sleeve, and her body is enveloped in a voluptuous wrap. While the dress is loose, it nonetheless follows the “tight bodied” style via an invisible corset – such images exude a sense of status and Augustan decorum, and were highly influential in transmitting these values into the first half of the eighteenth century. An inscription on the portrait identifies the sitter: 'Tufton Daughter of Sr Wm. Wray/ Married to Ld Chief Baron Montagu' and on the reverse is a handwritten label: ‘Sir Godfrey Kneller 1648-1723. Portrait of Tufton Wray cir 1683. Collection: Homedown, Hambledon No. 24’. Tufton Wray was a daughter of English politician, Sir William Wray, 1st Baronet, of Ashby (c.1625-1669) - the Wray’s were a family of judges and politicians for many generations. She had three brothers: Sir Christopher (c.1652-1679), Sir William (died c.1686), and Sir Edward (all died without issue), and four sisters. On the 6th October 1694 she married Sir James Montagu (1666-1723) in London. Sir James was an English lawyer, Whig politician, a judge, and also as Solicitor General and Attorney General under Queen Anne. The couple had one son, Charles (1695-1759), and one daughter, Elizabeth (d. 9th March 1746). Charles was a politician and he succeeded the estates of his father in 1723. He married Ann Colladon (died 1780) in 1725, daughter of Sir Theodore Colladon of Chelsea, and sub-governess to the Princesses. The couple had a daughter and two sons, their son Frederick (1733-1800) succeeded his father’s estate, and around 1787 he built Papplewick Hall which became the family seats for much of the 18th century. Robin Hood is, of course, said to have haunted the district, and a cave, called Robin Hood’s Stable, is close to the hall. Frederick died childless and the Papplewick estate passed to his sister’s grandson Richard Fountayne-Wilson (1783-1847) together with the surname of Montagu. In 1826 he gave it by Royal Licence to his eldest son, Andrew, who was 10-year-old at the time. Andrew Montagu took charge of the 1,758-acre estate during 1840 and moved into Papplewick Hall from his home at Normanton, Rutland. He never married and on his death in 1895, the Papplewick Estate was left in trust, for his brother's youngest son, James Fountayne Montagu. James inherited the estate on his 25th birthday in December 1912, and he developed it as a horse breeding centre however the business failed and Papplewick was sold in April 1919 to Alderman Albert Ball. Elizabeth married Sir Clement Wearg (1686–1726), an English lawyer and politician, and solicitor-general from 1724. Elizabeth and Clement were interred in the same grave, under a plain raised tomb, in Temple Church (London), with accordance of Clement’s will. The sitter died 6th September 1712 and her tomb in Canterbury Cathedral in Kent has a Latin inscription which translates to English as: Under this Marble lies...
