Foal
Located in PARIS, FR
Foal by Berthe MARTINIE (1883-1958) Sculpture in bronze with a black patina Signed twice " Martinie " on the base With the foundry stamp " Valsuani " France circa 1935 height 21,2 cm A similar model is exhibited at the Museum of Modern art in Paris (Inv. AMS 3). Biography : Berthe Martinie (1883-1958), was a French painter and sculptor. From 1906 to 1908, she studied at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Paris, in the only studio open to women, that of the painter Ferdinand Humbert (1842-1934). In 1913, Berthe married Henri Martinie, journalist and art critic, who supported her throughout her career. The beginnings of her family life and the First World War nevertheless marked an interruption in her creation. Berthe Martinie frequented the sculptors Robert Wlerick (1882-1944) and Jean Carton...

Merry-Go-Round
Located in New York, NY
Reginald Marsh (1898-1954), Merry-Go-Round, etching and engraving, 1938, signed in pencil lower right and inscribed Forty Proofs lower left, [also signed in the plate lower left and inscribed SC]. Reference: Sasowsky 179, fourth state (of 4). In good condition, with margins (a paper loss upper right corner well outside of the platemark, stains from prior hinging, notations in pencil lower margin edge). 10 x 8, the sheet 11 1/2 x 9 1/8 inches. A very good impression, printed in black on a wove paper with a partial FRANCE watermark. Sasowsky notes that Marsh printed 15 impressions of this state (and only one or two of the prior states), and considered only 10 of the 15 valuable. His notation “Forty Proofs” is therefore surely an expression of a hoped-for edition size, as opposed to an actual edition size. We have found this quite often the case with Marsh prints – he indicates an edition size but the actual number of impressions printed is considerably smaller. There is an eerie, almost ominous note in this, as in several of Marsh’s merry-go-round prints...

Two Nudes, USA, circa 1930s Signed in ink by the artist Pen and ink on paper
Located in Toronto, Ontario
Louise Nevelson (1899-1988) stands as one of the most important artists of the 20th century. She is renowned for her monochromatic sculptural wooden constructions. However, it is important to emphasize that Nevelson toiled and experimented for nearly 30 years before arriving at her signature style, and overdue success, in the late 1950s. In recent years there has been an increase in scholarship, awareness, and collector interest in Nevelson's early work, as she was an early adopter of modernism in America. This drawing is a fine example from this era. After Nevelson divorced in 1931, she was finally liberated to devote herself to art-making. She studied at the Art Students League in New York and made several influential trips to Europe where she began studying with Hans Hoffmann...

Mother Goose Goes To Hollywood Storyboard
Located in Los Angeles, CA
MEDIUM: Original Storyboard Drawing PRODUCTION: Mother Goose Goes to Hollywood, 1938 IMAGE SIZE: 7" x 9" FRAMING: Double Aperture -Framing included in Pricing SKU: CCV1385 ABOUT THE IMAGE: In this scene we see The Pieman (Oliver Hardy) is busy tending a large stack of his pies on a wagon. Laurel refuses an offered pie, but picks one from the middle of the stack, which alarms Hardy, fearing the stack will collapse. Nothing happens, however and a reassured Hardy tries to do the same. When the stack collapses and one of the pies lands on his head, he looks angrily at Laurel. Laurel swallows his pie in one piece and then snickers at Hardy. Hardy throws one of his pies at Laurel, who ducks his head inside his shirt, and the pie lands in the face of Katharine Hepburn. This piece comes with a Certificate of Authenticity! ABOUT THE MEDIUM: Original Production Storyboard Drawings are one-of-a-kind pieces of art that were used in the creation of an animated film or television show. They are a sequence of drawings, typically with some directions and dialogue, representing the shots planned for a movie or television production. ABOUT THE FILM: Mother Goose Goes Hollywood is a 1938 animated short film produced by Walt Disney Productions and distributed by RKO Radio Pictures.[1] The short was released on December 23, 1938.[2] The film parodies several Mother Goose nursery rhymes using caricatures of popular Hollywood film stars of the 1930s. The film was directed by Wilfred Jackson and was the third-to-last Silly Symphony...

The Court Ladies Dressed Gerda - Women Illustrators
Located in Miami, FL
Women illustrators were alive, well, and quite active in the early 20th century. Most of their production was associated with topics that dealt with the home, children or fairy tales. "End of Winter"
By John E. Berninger
Located in Lambertville, NJ
Jim’s of Lambertville is proud to offer this artwork by: John Berninger (1897 - 1981) A Pennsylvania landscape painter living in Allentown, John Berninger is described by art writer, Geoff Gehman, as being in the "outer ring of the New Hope School." His career was devoted to depicting his region in realist-impressionist style, especially snowscenes and landmarks such as Meyers Bridge in Allentown. Berninger studied with Orlando Gray Wales, Arlington Lindenmuth and Walter Emerson Baum, and then was an art instructor at the Kline-Baum School in Allentown. In 1934, he was selected as one of four students of Baum into the Circulating Picture Club of the Philadelphia Art Alliance, and two years later, he became Curator at the Allentown Art Museum, which had just been founded by Baum. Berninger's wife, Mabel, assisted him and served as museum curator and secretary of the Circulating Picture Club. In 1939, he joined the jewelry store, Wuchter and Berninger, as a partner, and advertised his paintings by placing them in the store's window. A local publisher and art enthusiast, Robert Rodale, saw his work there and years later, in 2004, held the first major exhibition of Berninger's artwork. The next year, Berninger's work was represented in the Allentown Museum exhibit, "Allentown Impressions: Views of City Parks". A frequent painting companion was Karl Buesgen...
