Film Noir is new body of work that has emerged out of the Infinity series, a vast, ongoing project that Armstrong has been working on for more than fifteen years. Armstrong revisits the themes of the classic black-and-white films of the 1940s and -50s through these photographs, bringing to them the lush, saturated colors for which he has become known. Each photograph features a solitary figure contemplating the unknown, ostensibly wrestling with the ethical and philosophical dilemmas explored in the mysterious and moody cinema of Fritz Lang and Otto Preminger, among others. Despite the injection of color—a marker of light and, symbolically, enlightenment—the images remain unresolved and instead hint at the increased uncertainties of contemporary life. Film Noir appropriates images from a variety of sources—advertising, stock material, landscape painting—that are then collaged and re-photographed out of focus. Armstrong subverts the photographic norm by setting his lens at infinity (a setting traditionally used to capture distance) before shooting close up. Extreme blurring de-materializes the figures, transforming them from the mundane to the ephemeral and enigmatic. Through his process, Armstrong aims to blend and distill hues to build a new chromatic psychology and create meditative pieces that will transport the viewer to another world. Bill Armstrong was born in 1952 and currently lives in New York City. He graduated magna cum laude in 1979 from Boston University with a B.A. in the History of Art and later earned his M.B.A. Armstrong has exhibited at institutions such as the Philadelphia Museum of Art, the Hayward Gallery, London, and Musee De l’Elysse, Lausanne; his work can also be found in the permanent collections of the Bilbliotheque National de France, Paris, the Brooklyn Museum, New York, and the Victoria and Albert Museum, London. The recipient of numerous awards for his art, Armstrong is a professor of photography at the School of Visual Arts and teaches at the International Center of Photography, New York City.
