About the Item

"Modality No. 2" is a geometric contemporary photograph, featuring a distinctive combination of blue, orange, brown, and white composed in a crisp, graphic layout. This abstract work comes from Brenda Biondo's "Modalities" series, the third portfolio of the artist's abstraction work based on atmospheric light and color. In her earlier series "Paper Skies" and "Moving Pictures," Brenda Biondo takes printed sky images that have been physically folded and/or cut, and rephotographs them in front of actual sky at different times of day and during different seasons. The result, in turn, is an abstract image that emphasizes the ambiguity between the real and the reproduced. In "Modalities," the artist creates digital montages composed of hundreds of images captured during the creation of "Paper Skies" and "Moving Pictures," engaging in a process of re-imagining and re-contextualizing her previous work. As such, "Modality No. 2" consists of multiple fragments of photographed sky pieced together in a jagged formation, transforming the sky into something else entirely. The work can be produced in two different ways: as dye sublimation on aluminum, or as an archival pigment print. Listed prices refer to works produced via the dye sublimation process, and include the cost of framing and shipping the work as well. Biondo's work has been exhibited in shows throughout the country and published in numerous print and online publications, including The Wall Street Journal, The Washington Post, The Denver Post and Lenscratch. Her photographs are in the collections of the Library of Congress, the Museum of Photographic Arts, the San Diego Museum of Art and the collections of numerous corporations and individuals. A solo exhibit of her work opened at the San Diego Museum of Art in July 2017. Her book of photographs, Once Upon a Playground, was published by the University Press of New England in 2014 and is now the subject of a five-year traveling exhibit organized by ExhibitsUSA.
