Elliott Kaufman
Street Dance 3.9B (Black & White Abstract Urban Photography)

2012

About the Item

archival digital print, edition of 10 Image: 27 x 44 inches Paper size: 33 x 29 inches Elliot Kaufman's lens is aimed this time around at city dwellers going up and down subway steps, which has a black and white quality, accented by pops of color. Human figures are photographed from overhead, their long shadows falling vertically down the steps to enhance the composition. The photograph is available for purchase unframed with a white border. About the artist: Elliott Kaufman’s photographs on the passage of time (Time Transformations) encompass many of the same aspects as his architectural photography. Specifically the observation and the positioning of the sun and how the environment, whether built or natural, is altered by the movement of light. He anticipates exactly what the sun will do when it reaches a certain angle and how it will affect and inform his photograph. The original sources of this imagery are what we see – sky and water. Kaufman sets up a static camera shot, sometimes for 3-4 days or sometimes just a few hours at intervals of every one second to every hour, depending on the view and dynamic movement of the scene For Kaufman, pursuing this type of imagery is not something he would have thought to do with the many analog camera formats he has used in the past. Certainly, the extent to which these types of images can be constructed owe much to the advent of digital photography. Although there have been many photographers who have experimented with multiple exposures over the course of the history of photography, from in camera “rewinds” to complicated overlaying darkroom techniques, few have experimented with direct layering of discordant images. A number of artists have led him in this direction, including the Bauhaus and the collaborative media which they pioneered, the 1977 film Powers Of Ten, which depicts the relative scale of the universe in factors of ten, Mike Figgis’ experimental film Timecode, as well as the multiple sequences by photographers Harry Callahan, Ray K. Metzger, Eadweard Muybridge and Jerry Ulesman.

  • Chasing The Wind
    By Keith Ladzinski

In 2015 I while on assignment for National Geographic for a story centered around Montana Culture, I was offered a chance to accompany a family of ranchers to photograph them relocating a herd of 125 horses from Winter to Summer pasture. Throughout the winter, this herd had been moved to lower elevation, some 50 miles south where they were mostly left to themselves to graze at their leisure. During this 6 month period of time the horses become somewhat feral, unruly and less willing to take direction, making for a long hard day or all involved. On horse back of their own, the cowboys drive the horses to higher elevation along a 50 mile network of trails and dirt road "getting out that winter energy" as it was described. I shot this motion panned photograph here as a small portion of the herd ran by thunderously. I could feel the ground quaking under their powerful hooves, even at my stance some 50 feet away. It was one of my favorite images from the assignment and I'm pleased to now offer this as a limited edition print in 3 different sizes. Printed at my studio in Boulder Colorado...
