Throughout 2019 and 2020 I spent much of my time in the trenches of a long form assignment for National Geographic Magazine documenting the Great Lakes of North America. This jewel of the planet contains 20% of the worlds fresh water and is home to an annual 6 trillion dollar economy shared by the United States and Canada. On this this particular day I was positioned on the south west shores of Lake Superior, it was stormy and dully gray, the kind that makes you think twice about being out. Thinking photography was likely a foregone conclusion I had decided to scout the periphery of a section of shore line, the waves were crashing in under threatening skies. As I pushed further in a came upon a small pond covered in beautiful lilies that stopped me in my tracks. The car was a good distance away, with the help of my assistant I decided to hike back to the car and grab the under water housing and lights. As soon as I submerged the camera underwater, I knew the scene was special. The dark skies were selectively letting light in, allowing me to sculpt the scene with external lighting...
