About the Item

Color photography in the mid-1970s had barely emerged as a recognized fine art form. The few works in color that museum curators considered were mostly nature pictures or snapshot-like images done in large format. Mitchell Funk, on the other hand, was going in another direction. He was concerned with the concept of elevating color in color photography. His experimentations were deep and varied. The present work, "Chrysler Building with Brooklyn Bridge," is characterized by strong graphics, flat, punchy color, and unexpected composition, brought to life by a multiple exposure that combines two of New York's most iconic structures. For its time, it was an original visual. Today, it still holds up as a pioneering, almost poster-like statement with high-key, bright color. The image is part of a new epic exhibition, Mitchell Funk Photographs The Chrysler Building for 50 Years. The Chrysler Building is one of the most photographed buildings in the world. Yet Mitchell Funk's photographs of it are anything but a tourist snapshot. For 50 years, Funk has been celebrating and rediscovering it visually in a way that exemplifies the innovative spirit of its creators. The work is signed dated and numbered 3/15 lower right recto, with other sizes available, and it's unframed and printed later. Printed on Hahnemühle Fine Art paper Mitchell Funk is a pioneer of " Color Photography" In 1970 he participated in one the first " Color Photography" shows at a major museum.
