Beau Simmons
Cowboys Never Die

2022

About the Item

Frame adds 7" to dimensions. Artist Journal Entry: "The cowboy and western lifestyle is always in an ebb-and-flow state in our society. When new hit television shows or movies come out, it tends to rise again in popularity in pop culture. What most people don’t see is that there is a thriving community that is still hard at work every single day behind barbed wire fences. Men and women caring for the land and the animals that we rely on in this country. Most of us can become easily distracted by a society that has misled us to believe that luxury items, vanity, and fame, are the only examples of success. Where value is determined by the number in one’s bank account. We’re constantly scrambling to make it to the top without realizing that these lifestyles and items are only temporary. You can’t take them with you once you’ve given your bones back to the earth. I captured this photograph out in west Texas just outside the small town of Marfa. I wanted to create an artwork that honors the American cowboy and places them at the forefront of our culture. A way to highlight them and their story. When trends shift and modern-day influence fades, cowboys never die." About The Artist: Beau Simmons has been a professional photographer since 2009. He grew up just outside Joshua Tree National Park, CA. He made a name for himself at 21 in the fashion photography industry working with clients including Marc Jacobs, 7 For All Mankind, Guess Jeans, and Converse. He was a go-to photographer for such agencies as Elite Models, IMG, and Ford Models. The fashion scene began to grind on Beau. Being a cowboy is in his blood. In this spirit, he decided to pursue his love for the western lifestyle and the wonder of the American landscape. Beau captures his artwork exclusively on film using the lost art of medium and large format film photography. Taking inspiration from masters of film photography like Kurt Marcus and Steven Shore, Beau finds passion in capturing some of the forgotten lifestyles of our time. By telling a story influenced by cowboys and the western culture, his body of work focuses on preserving authentic moments and documenting what might be referred to as a lost era in today’s society. His body of work is a collection of memories captured predominantly throughout North America. His commitment to telling an authentic story also includes working with American veterans and is on full display in his first feature coffee table book, The Twenty-Year War, that he created with two combat veterans, one of whom is his childhood friend. Beau is based in North Carolina but can usually be found traveling the United States, working on various ranches while capturing the western lifestyle.

  • Carwash '78

Framed Size: 55.25 in. x 45.2 in. Artist Journal Entry: "I find a lot of inspiration from the 70s era. The classic cars, the lifestyle, it's always captivated me. I went into this idea with the thought of a typical warm summer day in 1978. These types of photos are always a joy to produce because I get to outsource outdated items such as classic cars and vintage wardrobes but still add a Western twist to them. To me, it's something you'd expect to see every day in the country. Where a cowboy would cool his horse off after working all morning under a hot sun, mixed in with the everyday customer looking to detail their car before hitting up the honky tonk that night. This image just looks like it was taken in a much simpler time. When the little things like your local carwash were an everyday thing. I was fortunate enough to include local cowboys and cowgirls to help bring this vision to life. We staged the vehicles on a Sunday morning and trailered the horse out with us to be the focal point of the image. Each one of these men and women either rodeo full-time or work on a nearby ranch. After developing the film and getting the final image back from the lab, it brought back so many memories of my own. I remember growing up getting excited to grab a handful of quarters and help my parents wash the car. If we didn't have change, I would just wash the cars at home and take a drink from the outside hose when it got too hot out. This artwork is dedicated to those memorable times while also creating a sense of wonder for the viewer." About The Artist: Beau Simmons...

  • Cowgirl Summer
    Located in Miami, FL
Frame adds 7" to dimensions. Artist Journal Entry: "This artwork was an image that was captured while visiting a ranch in Stephenville, TX. Each one of these women either cowboy daily or compete in rodeos. I have been wanting to highlight more women throughout my work who represent the western lifestyle. Their presence in this industry and in our lives is needed and should be honored. I photographed this moment just as they were finishing up doctoring some cattle and had a break to enjoy the sun along with a few cold beers. After all, western women sure do know how to keep up with us men while also showing us up more often than we’d like to admit. When I tell you that these women are just built differently, it’s clear from the moment you shake hands with them. They don’t care about the dirt under their nails, the mud on their boots, or the occasional thorns twisted up in their hair. When it comes to maintaining the land and the animals they look after, they don’t cut corners or have time to complain. However, when the work is done, they still know how to throw on an outfit that catches stares from every corner of the saloon. The balance of a nurturing and strong woman is one of the most admirable traits. You just don’t see it everywhere but when you do, you know it’s special. My hat is off to the women who represent this lifestyle and everything they contribute to it." About The Artist: Beau Simmons...

  • Pit Stop
    Located in Miami, FL
Frame adds 7" to dimensions. Artist Journal Entry: "My artwork, Pit Stop, was created with references like Bonnie & Clyde and the movie Pulp Fiction floating around in my head. A story that focuses on two lovers stopping at an old diner somewhere in the Mojave desert. An empty and barren wasteland that stretches on for miles and miles offering those who visit a last call to fill up on gas, grab a bite to eat, or crash in an old dusty motel room for the night. I wanted to capture a mood that felt lived in. A place that allows your mind to engage with it and feel like you’re standing there under a hot summer sun. Surrounding you in an environment filled with rolling tumbleweeds, cracked leather seats, 70s country echoing through the valley, the smell of burgers on the grill, cigarette smoke dancing in the air, the bell hanging above the gas station door dinging as you walk in, and the lovely stare from a woman’s eyes sitting beside you. This artwork was also an opportunity for me to create a scenario that I believe was just an average day fifty years ago. A much simpler time in a place I once called home. This artwork is for those who live for adventure. For those who live on the road. Finally, for those who just need a mental escape from our everyday lives." About The Artist: Beau Simmons...

  • Together As One
    Located in Miami, FL
Frame adds 7" to dimensions. Artist Journal Entry: "An artwork that shouldn't have come together so perfectly. The photo you see here was a one-and-done kind of photo. Most of my work is thought out beforehand since I'm shooting on film, but this photo has been on my mind for years now. It's a photo that is very difficult to pull off and the timing has to be just right. When the owners walked the horses up to one another the male on the left went down to nuzzle the female on the right and quickly rested their heads against each other. It was almost as if they were destined to be together. With no time to spare, I had to manually focus as quickly as possible and capture this moment just in time before they moved out of the frame. When I received my film back from the lab I couldn't have been any happier with how it turned out. The male horse on the left has this masculine and powerful presence but is calmly resting his head so gently against the female to the right. To me, it represents intimacy and true love. A love that dedicates itself to protecting and providing for another soul. The way that their faces perfectly line up as their eyes meet, creates an energy filled with devotion while allowing for a moment of stillness. It perfectly portrays that when you find a love that is pure and unwavering, nothing can come between two hearts. You are together as one." About The Artist: Beau Simmons...
