About

Pioneers of French photography, the Bisson brothers (Louis-Auguste Bisson and Auguste-Rosalie Bisson) photographed a series of architectural images in Europe in the early 1860s. This stunning warm-hued albumen print is one such example from the series and features the façade of the Imperial Library of the Louvre. Situated within the grounds of the Louvre Palace in Paris, the Imperial Library and its nearly 100,000 volumes of rare books was destroyed in 1871 during the Paris Commune, approximately a decade after this image was taken. The entrance doors are set as the focal point of the composition, drawing the viewer into the depth of the building and its place in history. A later work in the oeuvre of photographs produced by the Bisson Freres studio, 'Imperial Library of the Louvre' is an excellent example of the brothers snapshot style of photography, which defied the posed photographic techniques that were made popular at the time by the daguerreotype. Printed on semi-gloss paper and mounted on original paper, this print features a blindstamp photographers' monogram in red, a red facsimile signature and title in pencil and a stamped photographers' credit on the mount. This print was previously in the collection of the Museum of Modern Art, New York, and another print of this image currently resides in the collection of the J. Paul Getty Museum, Los Angeles. Albumen print mounted on paper Blindstamped with the photographers' monogram on the front, with red facsimile signature and title in pencil on the front of the mount; also stamped with the photographers' credit in blue on the back of the mount Image is approximately approximately 18 x 14 in. (45.7 x 35.5 cm.) Mount is approximately 22 x 18 in. (55.8 x 45.7 cm.)
