About

The sound of winter snow is silence. Pausing in a snow filled valley you are compelled by nature's power. It mesmerizes in its immensity. Standing still, crunching footsteps cease, a dense fog engulfs, and silence deafens. My first experience of this winter silence came during a trip to Bear Valley. I came across a small snow covered meadow, lonely and separate from the rest of the world. Time seemed to fade away and silence welled up in the hills around me. White shapes and their companion shadows danced together through the deep valley. Abstract forms created pristine images, strange, surreal and sensual. The high Sierra, pregnant with its wondrous shape and form, held a mother lode of images waiting for me to capture. I photographed on sunlit days; days so crisp it felt they might break like brittle glass. I became so absorbed by these wondrous landscapes of snow and ice, that I returned many times with my lens - then just a 4x5" camera with black and white film. I would camp out and the days would be filled with a blanketing fog, falling snow, hail and sleet. Captivated, captured, entranced by nature's winter, I had to will myself away. High-resolution digital files scanned from these negatives reveal remarkable detail never before possible through conventional processing and printing. These prints offer a fresh new vision of the images I procured from the quiet drama of winter's silent stage. Colin McRae began his career photographing musicians for music labels and publications, and later served as the photographer for the Art Museum of the University of California at Berkeley. He has since gone on to produce images of people at work and play and the places they inhabit and visit. He has the distinction of being one of the world’s leading architectural photographers and also a preeminent location lifestyle shooter. Among his clients have been Apple Computer, Bank of America, Club Med, Coach, snd Sony, and publications, including Interiors, Newsweek, Time, Travel and Leisure, and House and Garden. His photographs have also illustrated numerous books on art and architecture, both in the United States and abroad. He is currently represented by the McLoughlin Gallery of San Francisco.
