About the Item

The Last Supper in Chicago Chicago, USA - 2022 Archival Pigment Print on 315gsm Hahnemühle Photo Rag Baryta Paper Each is signed, dated and numbered on the front. Edition Size: 50 Available image sizes: 45 x 52 inches 52 x 61 inches 71 x 85 inches "In November 2022, at the United Center in Chicago, legendary Slovakian hockey player - Marián Hossa - had his shirt retired in front of 24,000 adoring and thankful Blackhawks fans. It was an emotional evening and one that I felt privileged to watch, alongside Marián’s friends and family. 48 hours previously, Marián was joined by two other Chicago “Hall of Famers”, Chris Chelios and Denis Savard, and nine other Blackhawks stars to collaborate with me on an idea that had been marinating in my mind for some time. My concept was to merge in unity, two of Chicago’s most precious possessions, its architecture and its beloved Blackhawks. This is a proud city and Chicagoans hold these assets close to their hearts. I had pondered over the composition for a few weeks but knew the city and the path of the river well enough to know my spot. My creative leaning was to play around with the idea of a Last Supper, after all, Chicago is also renowned for its food and a play on the masterpiece legitimized a reason for the player positions. I also wanted to build a sense of the cold into the narrative but this didn’t need much effort as it was freezing on the river on that winter night. I had never previously met any of these sportsmen but was most impressed by their charm and enthusiasm for the project, which will raise funds for disadvantaged former players. I know some of these guys are very famous but they wear their fame with the lightest of touch. It was also clear that Hossa was the Boss - he was as a player and he still is now, a born leader for sure."

Born in Glasgow, Scotland in 1966, he is an internationally acclaimed fine art photographer and Europe’s best selling wildlife photographer. "My plan was to find a section of Sunset Boulevard emblematic of Hollywood - it needed to be familiar to all and have some depth. After a great deal of walking up and down, we chose a spot 200 yards east of the entrance to Chateau Marmont, because the billboards looking west were large and well positioned and the hotel and the hotel sign are so iconic. The bend in the road also helped give the frame a compositional balance that I could not find on other sections - such as Sunset Plaza. In my head it was always going to be a wide angle shot. To shut the road down meant shooting first thing on a Sunday morning - which worked as we knew the best light would be sunrise if we were shooting towards the Pacific. Equally, I did not want the sun to rise too much as it would be tough on both the wolf and the model’s eyes. Of course, the model was not your run of the mill model - it was Alessandra Ambrosio - one of the world’s most photographed women. She has a very special look and is so easy to work with. The photograph is as I wanted - very LA, very West Hollywood and jammed with reference points. It’s a little crazy, a little La La Land, but that was the goal. Most of all, to the best of my knowledge, it’s authentic. No one can try and copy it now. "Once Upon a Time...
