About the Item
Emotional and mythic vision pervade Debbie Fleming Caffery's captivating images of life in her native southern Louisiana, Portugal and Mexico. Her photographs are not objective documents, but poetic stories that capture the mystery and spirit of the people and places she encounters. Caffery is most comfortable in the shadows, drawn to movement, pattern, and deep tonality.
Caffery is the recipient of numerous awards, including a Guggenheim Fellowship, George Soros Foundation, Open Society Institute, Katrina Media Fellowship,The Lou Stoumen Award from the Museum of Photographic Arts in San Diego, and the Michael P. Smith Documentary Photography Award, Louisiana Endowment for the Humanities. Her early work on the Louisiana sugar cane harvesting resulted in a book, Carry Me Home, published by the Smithsonian Press, and was the subject of a one-person show at the National Museum of American History in Washington, D.C. Her other books include Polly and The Shadows, published by Twin Palms Press; The Spirit and The Flesh, published by Radius Books; and Collection L’Oiseau Rare, Filigranes Edition, France. Her work is exhibited internationally and is in the permanent collections of the Museum of Modern Art, The Whitney Museum of American Art, the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, the Bibliotheque Nationale, The City of Paris, Fond Nationale D’Art Contemporain, the Museum Fur Kunst und Bewerbe, Germany, New Orleans Museum of Art, Ogden Museum, Harvard University, Tulane University, the Elton John Collection, and The Boston Museum of Fine Arts.
