Edward Alfano
Chengdu, China - Black & White Photograph of Banyan Tree Landscape with Palms

2019

About the Item

"Chengdu, China (6/10)," is a particularly striking image that can only truly be appreciated in person or via video. (Please inquire for more detailed shots, or video.) Alfano travels often to China and captures the mystery and wonder of its ancient grounds. He focuses not on the acclaimed reaching branches of the tree upper half, but the incredibly detailed root and trunk system. This composition abstracts the tree, forcing the viewer to reconsider what they are looking at. The shading and drawing like quality of the photograph further abstract the banyan, playing off the highlights and shadows created by its unique root system. This work is a statement piece and pulls viewers in with Alfano's distinctive aesthetic. This particular edition is expertly framed with archival materials, a sealed back and museum plexiglass. Alfano photographs all across the world, his most photographed regions are China, Italy, and Huntington Gardens in San Marino. In his photographs of Huntington Gardens, one can see the influence his early university education in biology and plant anatomy had on him as a budding artist. He focused on plant anatomy and ultrastructure as a graduate student, where he learned how to use infrared film, which remained his choice of medium for the remainder of his career. Alfano’s work eludes categorization, while his subject matter is either landscape, architecture, or monuments, Alfano’s use of technology, unique perspectives and innovative compositions removes him from the traditional style of photography of such objects, and firmly positions his style among the pioneers of surrealism. The photographer utilizes both archaic and modern technology in his practice. Alfano begins by shooting in infrared film, he then develops the film in a traditional darkroom, and scans it to produce a digital print of the image. This process further abstracts his subject matter with a soft focus finish, adding to the surreal quality of his work. Alfano uses the infrared film to manipulate light and shadow, further exploring how this push and pull of light can draw an alternative narrative to a common scene. The partnership of technology and traditional medium, gives Alfano's photographs a distinctive aesthetic, and sets his work apart from other photographers. Often mistaken for highly-skilled drawings, Alfano's aesthetic is eye-catching, especially in his larger photographs. They are powerful pieces that make a statement on any wall. Edward Alfano's prints are available in various sizes and frame types. Prints can be framed in a traditional wood frame with a white matte or mounted on aluminum. Aluminum mounted prints are hung with a french cleat. Please inquire if you are interested in a different size. • Twilight #19, Gathering - Silver Birch Tree - Black and White Landscape Print
    Located in London, GB
A stand of spinous silver birch gather, shining white against the inky night... Over a three-year period, Goodall has visited areas of British forest and moorland to make images that he refers to as being 'more akin to fairytale than documentary'. There is indeed an unreal quality to the images, and this is perhaps a result of using artificial lighting; it reminds one of those spooky, unnaturally lit forests we see in the movies. In the absence of any natural illumination (save for a few that include the moon), scenes are lit as if they are in a studio setting. This results in imagery that feels eerily unfamiliar; transporting the viewer from the recognisable landscape into a kind of liminal netherworld - it's the landscape, but not as we are used to seeing it. Goodall responds to this observation by speaking about the possibility of the darkness being seen as a metaphor for the unconscious mind; the 'light' of consciousness illuminates the known forms of tree and rock, but beyond these certainties lies the unknown. When your eyes have little information, your imagination takes over and fills in the gaps." - Jasper Goodall...
