Alfano photographs all across the world, his most photographed regions are China, Italy, and Huntington Gardens in San Marino. In his photographs of Huntington Garden’s, one can see the influence his early university education in biology and plant anatomy had on him as a budding artist. He focused on plant anatomy and ultrastructure as a graduate student, where he learned how to use infrared film, which remained his choice of medium for the remainder of his career. Alfano’s work eludes categorization, while his subject matter is either landscape, architecture, or monuments, Alfano’s use of technology, unique perspectives, and innovative compositions removes him from the traditional style of photography of such objects and firmly positions his style among the pioneers of surrealism. The photographer utilizes both archaic and modern technology in his practice. Alfano begins by shooting in infrared film, which has not been manufactured in almost a decade. He then develops the film in a traditional darkroom and scans it to produce a digital print of the image. This process further abstracts his subject matter with a soft-focus finish, adding to the surreal quality of his work. Alfano uses the infrared film to manipulate light and shadow, further exploring how this push and pull of light can draw an alternative narrative to a common scene. The partnership of technology and traditional medium gives Alfano's photographs a distinctive aesthetic and sets his work apart from other photographers. Due to the rarity of infrared film, one can consider Alfano’s work and practice as ephemeral, or ethereal, as one day his store of the film will run out and his work will be finished. Edward Alfano's prints are available in various sizes and frame types. Prints can be framed in a traditional wood frame with a white matte or mounted on aluminum. Aluminum mounted prints are hung with a french cleat. Please inquire if you are interested in a different size.
