Eugène Atget
Eugene Atget (1857- 1927) took up photography in the late 1880s, turning his camera on Paris in 1898. He captured Parisian streetscapes, shop fronts, and architectural details in a straight, documentary style, in contrast to the Pictorialist trend at the time. Atget made beautiful and sensitive documents and by the early 1920s, up until his death, Atget's works became increasingly expressive, metaphorical, and were championed by the Surrealists for their poetic and haunting mood. Thanks to the support of American photographer Berenice Abbott (1898- 1991), French photographer Eugene Atget became recognized as one of the great early modern photographers. He recorded Old Paris and Atget’s lifespan corresponded with urban planner Haussmann and his famous transformation of Paris into a modern city. Atget documented Paris painstakingly on meanderings throughout the City of Light into the 20th Century. Berenice Abbott is famous for her black-and-white photographs of New York City. She also created a large body of portraits that she made in Paris. Abbott found inspiration in the Parisian streetscapes of Eugene Atget, an influence that would carry over into her work and the series “Changing New York” (1935-38). A major body of Abbott’s work was made during the Works Progress Administration/Federal Art Project."

- Andreas Feininger Monumental B&W Photograph, 1951By Andreas FeiningerLocated in Washington, DCLarge and wonderful B & W photograph by American photographer Andreas Feininger (1906-1999). Photograph is of a gorilla rib cage. Printed in 1951, it measures 8ft. 10 in. x 10ft. Photograph is attached to linen and can be rolled for easy storage and shipping. Feininger was born in Paris, France, the eldest son of Julia Berg, a German Jew, and the American painter and art educator Lyonel Feininger (1871-1956). His paternal grandparents were the German violinist Karl Feininger (1844–1922) and the American singer Elizabeth Feininger, (née Lutz), who was also of German descent. His younger brother was the painter and photographer T. Lux Feininger (1910–2011) In 1908 the Feininger family moved to Berlin, and in 1919 to Weimar, where Lyonel Feininger took up the post of Master of the Printing Workshop at the newly formed Bauhaus art school.[2] Andreas left school at 16, in 1922, to study at the Bauhaus; he graduated as a cabinetmaker in April 1925. Afterwards he studied architecture, initially at the Staatliche Bauschule Weimar (State Architectural College, Weimar) and later at the Staatliche Bauschule Zerbst. (Zerbst is a city in the German state of Saxony-Anhalt, about 20 km from Dessau, where the Bauhaus moved to in 1926.) The Feininger family moved to Dessau with the Bauhaus. In addition to continuing his architectural studies in Zerbst, Andreas developed an interest in photography and was given guidance by neighbour and Bauhaus teacher László Moholy-Nagy.[3] In 1936, he gave up architecture and moved to Sweden, where he focused on photography. In advance of World War II, in 1939, Feininger immigrated to the U.S. where he established himself as a freelance photographer. In 1943 he joined the staff of Life magazine, an association that lasted until 1962. Feininger became famous for his photographs of New York...Category

- Octopus Vulgaris ( Special Edition)By Jan C. SchlegelLocated in VALLAURIS, FRWhile also available as a platinum print on Arches Platinum Rag (56 x 76 cm), this larger version (63 x 99 cm) of Schlegel's famous "Octopus Vulgaris" is a true prowess. It is printed on 30 gsm Japanese Hand-made Gampi paper. Taking into account the thinness of the paper and the fact that the platinum salt emulsion is embedded into its fiber during the printing process, this is a real feat of technical strength. Considered as the most archival process of all; its perfectly matte tonal range goes from a cool, slightly purple black to split tones of brown and warm black, to a very warm brown. Sold framed with a museum glass measuring 85 x 115 cm _______ The ocean has always been one of the most mysterious places on earth. In the past many legends and myths have evolved around monsters living in the deep sea. As a child many of us used to fantasize about underwater monsters like giant colossal squids having so much power that they were able to take down ships. By looking at Jan C. Schlegel his pictures, you can get a small glimpse of the richness and diversity of our oceans. When we think of fish, we usually perceive them as food and think of salmon or tuna. The photographs reveal much more than what could be imagined and are truly a special tribute to all the different kind of species living underneath the surface. There are sea horses that look like dragons with galaxies on their skin, flounders with their perfect flat form and their ability to turn invisible or even squids that will remind you of aliens from another planet. Using platinum printing as a process allows Jan C. Schlegel to create a deepness in his pictures that makes every small detail and structure visible for the human eye. It gives you the impression of being able to feel the animal just by looking at the pictures. This series celebrates the art of nature...Category
