Mali Africa Photograph (African Village)

2003

About the Item

Fernando Natalici: "Mali Dust" location: Gao, Mali, Africa - 2003 Resin Coated photo paper. Hand Toned Sepia; shot with TRIX film 11x14 inches Some minor surface dimples; otherwise very good condition Unique. One of. Hand-signed on the verso. Obtained directly from artist Artist Notes: "I was working on a video project for Dutch TV about the Niger River, we came up from the town of Niamey, Niger on a small boat up the river; 3 people, 11 days, sleeping in tents on small islands near the middle of the river. It was too risky to set up camp on the river margin; we were documenting how the longest river in Africa works as a highway for trade and communication and to all sorts of activities... When we arrived in GAO, Mali, and checked into a small hotel. I go out to a balcony on the second floor; the sun was setting, the air was thick with sand blown from the Sahel desert, it was getting dark; you couldn't see much, just shapes; kids playing soccer, motorcycles and bikes, people in robes with their faces covered, it was almost too dark to shoot, only a slow shutter speed would work; it even heightened the appeal of the moment." 'CHELSEA 101' by noted New York downtown art scene photographer, Fernando Natalici Vintage original sepia toned photo taken in Manhattan's historic Chelsea area in 1979. Artist statement: "As I was riding by 101 West 25th Street, north-side of block, closer to 6th Ave., workers were removing a newer sign that was mounted on top of CHELSEA 101, unaware what was under… They didn’t show much surprise and proceeded to mount the new sign… Seeing that, from my bike, I stopped and got the shot before they covered it up with another sign… CHELSEA 101 remained there until the building was renovated; today, a window into a bygone era of family owned sewing machine shops..."
