Abstract Black and White Photograph - Nature of Particles #18

2020

About the Item

This is Untitled #18 from the Nature of Particles series. The Nature of Particles series consists of abstract photographs of ordinary particulates, that we observe in our everyday surroundings as floating fragments seen in shafts of light. My Nature of Particles series allows a safe distance for one to contemplate both positively and more recently, negatively, what could be happening below the threshold of unaided human sight. I capture the particles in motion. These tiny spheres seem to whirl in unseen eddies, roil in orbits, settle in spots and move on to circulate on invisible flowing currents of air. I use this commonplace occurrence to explore interesting visual possibilities that might remind us of a starry sky, or finely stirred deep ocean sediment or even as a visual immersion within a stream of flowing bubbles. The “Nature of Particles” series consists of 30 photographs created in the artist’s studio in New York during the winter/spring of 2020. Captured with digital media, the final photographs are produced by the artist in limited editions on museum-quality archival paper. About Howard Lewis: Lewis’ artistic practice often explores science, engineering, technology, and innovation. His intention is to create work that communicates the importance of the search for truth based on science and how the physical world looks and works. The images engage physics, mechanics and creative thinking that often evokes an innovation process. Many photographs are abstract or still life however, he also has a strong affinity for the environment, reflected in his photographs that often include elements of water and sky. Lewis started photographing when he was a teenager and continued through film school. He went on to work for many years as an advertising and editorial photographer where he photographed for international clients like Taylor Wines and General Foods. Lewis’ fine art photographs have been exhibited in galleries and cultural centers internationally, including the Gladstone Regional Museum and Gallery in Queensland, Australia, Florida Museum of Photographic Arts in Tampa; the James A. The sun, the sea, the waves, the spray, the bodies lying on the sand. Krichbaum's photos are like the antithesis of "postcard". No bather, no walker, not even a seagull, and yet everything is there. In his desire to leave the viewer free to imagine everything from his photos, the artist did not give titles to his photos, just an indication of date and place.
