Joachim Schmeisser
Portrait of Primo II, animal, wildlife, black and white photography, elephant

2017

About the Item

Edition 10 More sizes on request Primo was one of the last big tuskers in Amboseli, Kenya. He unfortunately died of natural causes in February 2020. For years, Joachim Schmeisser has been photographing the last giants of Africa at close range, creating exceptionally intimate portraits of species threatened with extinction. In his new series – The Last Of Their Kind – he focuses on the beauty of creation and its fragile transience. These striking images are timeless works that can be interpreted on different levels: as depictions of a distant past or as iconic memories in a not too distant future in which we can only admire these majestic creatures in zoos. They are both an homage and a final warning - visual revelations that sharpen our clouded view of nature in all its infinite complexity as well as recognizing what treasures we might irretrievably lose. In 2012, Joachim Schmeisser was awarded with the prestigious Hasselblad Master award for his series on African Wildlife. He is considered one of the most outstanding and multi-faceted Fine Art Photographers in the world. He is best known for his exceptionally intimate and touching portraits of the most endangered species in Africa. In 2017 his book »Elephants in Heaven« was launched by the German Publisher teNeues and sold out within 4 months. Particular noteworthy are his large-sized unique prints. By using a large format Sinar camera and medium format cameras he creates prints even in a format of three to 4 meters or more as a unique piece edition. – Photography, Animal, Africa, Wildlife, Nature, Large Format, Tusks, Elephant, Portrait, Close-Up, iconic, black and white photography

  • Twilight #19, Gathering - Silver Birch Tree - Black and White Landscape Print
    Located in London, GB
A stand of spinous silver birch gather, shining white against the inky night... Over a three-year period, Goodall has visited areas of British forest and moorland to make images that he refers to as being 'more akin to fairytale than documentary'. There is indeed an unreal quality to the images, and this is perhaps a result of using artificial lighting; it reminds one of those spooky, unnaturally lit forests we see in the movies. In the absence of any natural illumination (save for a few that include the moon), scenes are lit as if they are in a studio setting. This results in imagery that feels eerily unfamiliar; transporting the viewer from the recognisable landscape into a kind of liminal netherworld - it's the landscape, but not as we are used to seeing it. Goodall responds to this observation by speaking about the possibility of the darkness being seen as a metaphor for the unconscious mind; the 'light' of consciousness illuminates the known forms of tree and rock, but beyond these certainties lies the unknown. When your eyes have little information, your imagination takes over and fills in the gaps." - Jasper Goodall...
