About the Item
John met this Wodaabe girl who was carrying her young child in a remote market village called Sakabal in the far north of Niger’s Maradi province. Like many Wodaabe women, she had many permanent tattoos on her face; you can clearly see the tattoos on her forehead, across her nose, and at the sides of her mouth.
The Wodaabe are nomadic pastoralists whose lives are in constant motion as they seek water and pasture for their long horned cattle, sheep, goats, and camels. This remote and inhospitable Sahel region results in a life of extreme challenge.
John Kenny’s work is all shot on location in some of the remotest corners of Africa. His images are all taken with natural light and his subjects in their day to day attire.
The C-type prints are mounted with an acrylic face mount giving them a 3-dimensional appearance and a contemporary look.

When I found this pride of lions on the open short grass plains of Eastern Serengeti, I immediately thought I needed to create a group portrait. I am always looking to make photographs different from anything I have ever taken, and this was definitely one of those moments. I often aim for my portraits, especially of predators, to be striking and imposing, which means my camera needs to be extremely close to the subject. I used a remote-controlled camera to safely capture the shot without disturbing them with a large vehicle. My remote-controlled buggy allowed me to move the camera into position and adjust the composition, a technique I mastered over the past five years. In the morning, lions are often very active; seeing a foreign object...Category
