Michal Cala
The Lagisza Power Station, Silesia, Poland; Industrial landscape - Rare Vintage

1978

About the Item

This vintage print of the The Lagisza Power Station is extremely rare as it has been printed on warm tone paper giving a slight sepia effect. It is one of the last remaining vintage prints of this image available and it's a large print (40 x 58 cm) The Lagisza Power Station print is one of those most iconic industrial photographs from the Silesia series. ‘These houses are dwarfed by the huge power station cooling towers. It’s only steam coming from the towers; even so, it doesn’t look like a pleasant place to live. This miserable scene’s brightness comes from the houses’ small windows and the ever-present white plumes of steam.’ “Cala become relatively well known in Poland but he is still little known in the West, despite the fact that his work bears comparison with masters such as Bill Brandt and Robert Frank." - Bill Kouwenhoven, British Journal of Photography, 2007 See the additional images for the vintage print reference and framing. Print size: 40 x 58 cm Frame (black hardwood frame, museum mount-board and non reflective art glass): 56.5 x 74.5 cm/ 22.25 x 29.3 inches This print hasn't been owned before as its from the photographers's personal archive and currently is part of MMX Gallery's prints stock collection. • Twilight #19, Gathering - Silver Birch Tree - Black and White Landscape Print
    Located in London, GB
A stand of spinous silver birch gather, shining white against the inky night... Over a three-year period, Goodall has visited areas of British forest and moorland to make images that he refers to as being 'more akin to fairytale than documentary'. There is indeed an unreal quality to the images, and this is perhaps a result of using artificial lighting; it reminds one of those spooky, unnaturally lit forests we see in the movies. In the absence of any natural illumination (save for a few that include the moon), scenes are lit as if they are in a studio setting. This results in imagery that feels eerily unfamiliar; transporting the viewer from the recognisable landscape into a kind of liminal netherworld - it's the landscape, but not as we are used to seeing it. Goodall responds to this observation by speaking about the possibility of the darkness being seen as a metaphor for the unconscious mind; the 'light' of consciousness illuminates the known forms of tree and rock, but beyond these certainties lies the unknown. When your eyes have little information, your imagination takes over and fills in the gaps." - Jasper Goodall...
