Relatively unknown, this vast wilderness is the largest park in Tanzania but also the most difficult to access. The ecosystem is so diverse it contains open plains, woodland forests, spiky baobabs and rolling hills separated by the Great Ruaha River and its valley. Ruaha in the dry season is a paradise for predator aficionados like me. A friend of mine asked me recently if I “planted” my camera in order to take this picture. I was very pleased to answer No! It would have been too easy and less fun. I believe the camera to be the extension of my eye and should therefore never be planted but rather be part of my body. It is a magnificent tool invented to capture a brief moment in life that will last forever. As always on safari, safety is crucial and I respect the wildlife. I feel very lucky to have met my guide and done all my east African safaris with him. His knowledge and professionalism is second to none. On this occasion we decided to spice things up and used a simple trick. We observed this big male lion sleeping for a while. The night before he devoured a buffalo carcass and his belly was popping out clearly satisfied. Exhausted by his feast, he went on to sleep for a very long time and wasn’t giving me anything. After a few hours I decided to open the door of the jeep from a safe distance and every 10 minutes we would move the vehicle a few meters closer, always leaving the engine on. I must have been 2-3 meters from him now with the door still wide open and we switched the engine off but still keeping a close eye on him. The heat was at its peak as it often is the case during October in Ruaha. My guide and I looked at each other in agreement; he switched on the engine, awakening the giant, I clicked the shutter.” - Michel Ghatan Since first travelling to Tanzania in 2010, Michel Ghatan has been in love with the East African wildlife, seeking its beauty and remoteness which contrasts his city life. Michel has spent the decade since this first visit further exploring Tanzania, Botswana and Kenya, all the while developing his unique photographic process which is a testament to his passion for the wilderness. He uses local tribesmen including Maasai, Kikuyu and Samburu warriors as trackers, often on walking safaris - the purest method of meeting and photographing wild animals. Rather than relying on telephoto lenses and remote controls, which would allow him to work from the comfort of a Jeep, the majority of Michel's photographs are taken on foot with a 35mm lens, often taken as close as two meters from his subjects. Stricken by years of poaching, causing the East African animal population to decline by 90% in the last 75 years, the African wilderness has a human-inflicted impermanence which Michel's photography seeks to lay bare. His process demands a comprehensive and personal research into the animals that he photographs, as well as a level of patience which speaks to the intimate engagement he finds in his subjects, ultimately producing stunning images that also have a rich and personal history behind them. Michel was born in 1975 in Switzerland, and currently lives in London with his wife and children. Terry O'Neill (1938-2019) David Bowie, Diamond Dogs (v2) 1974 lifetime edition silver gelatin fine art archival print 24 x 20 in. (paper size) edition of 50 signed and numbered printed later Price: £9,360 GBP (inc. 20% UK VAT) Notes: David Bowie poses with a large barking dog for the artwork of his 1974 album Diamond Dogs in London. From the start of the 1960s and continuing until the present day the name of Terry O'Neill has become inextricably connected with some of the most interesting takes on photographic portraits of celebrities. From the Beatles and Rolling Stones in the 1960s to the Royal Family and the Prime Minister's family in more recent times Terry O'Neill has proved adept at recording the significant subjects of the day in a visually stimulating and sometimes unexpected way and thus illuminated history of our age. Terry O'Neill was born on 30 July 1938 in the East End of London. His career as a photographer evolved by chance out of his first ambition to become a jazz drummer. Leaving school at fourteen and then doing his National Service his ambition was to go to America to study with the great drummers there. He thought that the best way to travel frequently and inexpensively to the USA would be to get a job as an air steward for BOAC. The airline at that time had no vacancies for stewards but suggested he took a vacancy in their technical photographic unit, which he combined with time at an art school and he then became interested in photojournalism. At first, O'Neill worked as freelance at London Airport, later was offered a stunt as a reportage photographer at Heathrow. This was followed by three years in Fleet Street, with O'Neill at 21, the youngest photographer in Fleet Street taking pop pictures for the up-tempo Daily Sketch. One thing lead to another and O'Neill quickly became a significant image-maker and one of the group of talented young photographers who helped create the photographic icons of the 1960s and create part of the buzz that became Swinging London. The peer group that emerged in this decade included David Bailey, Terence Donovan and Brian Duffy from the East End and Patrick Lichfield and Lewis Morley...
