About the Item

"Iggy Backbend, London, 1972" Photography 24" x 20" inch 29/50 by Mick Rock Edition: 29/50 Medium: Silver gelatin limited edition photographic print on paper Iggy and The Stooges were highly influential in the development of punk rock and post-punk. Here, Iggy can be seen doing one of his infamous back bends during a concert in 1972. MICK ROCK Renowned rock photographer Mick Rock has long been called ‘the Man who Shot the Seventies’. The Times of London has described him as ‘the music world’s top snapper’. His earliest iconic photos were taken of Syd Barrett in 1969 while Mick was a student at Cambridge University, but he came to the fore in 1972 when he became Bowie’s official photographer. For two years he documented the meteoric rise to stardom of Bowie’s legendary alter ego Ziggy Stardust, shooting album covers, posters, artwork and videos for Life on Mars and Space Oddity and Jean Genie, plus, of course, a huge archive of photographs. Rock was instrumental in creating many classic rock n roll images throughout the 1970s, responsible for album covers such as Lou Reed’s ‘Transformer’, Iggy Pop’s ‘Raw Power’, Queen’s ‘Queen II’ and ‘Sheer Heart Attack’. Mick spent a lot of time in New York in the late 70s where he became very involved with the local ‘punk’ scene and extensively shot all the rising stars including The Ramones, Talking Heads and Blondie. His pictures, including The Ramones’ ‘End of the Century’, captured the revolutionary spirit of this groundbreaking period and made him the one of the most sought-after photographers in the world. He moved permanently to New York in 1982. Rock’s enthusiasm for his work has remained fresh and he continues to capture the musical spirit of succeeding eras through his photography with musicians throughout the 80’s and 90’s up to the present day.

Woman Protestor, March on Washington, 1963 by Leonard Freed, is a 14" x 11" gelatin silver photograph, signed and stamped on verso (back of photo) by the estate, Brigitte Freed (wife of the photographer). The photo is in Leonard Freed's book “This Is the Day: The March on Washington'' (p. 50). Leonard Freed enjoyed documentary storytelling and as a "concerned photographer" his work demonstrated humanitarian concerns. The photographer travelled to New York, Washington, D.C., and throughout the South, capturing the daily life of African-Americans. Documenting the 1960s Civil Rights Movement from the East Coast to the Deep South, Freed’s photo essay culminated in the book Black in White America, which contributed to Freed's becoming one of the well-known documentary photographers of 20th Century America. After Freed’s death in 2006 his widow, Brigitte Freed was inspired to compile a book on the March on Washington from her late husband’s archive when she heard then-Senator former President Barack Obama remark to an audience of civil rights activists, “I stand here because you walked.” The March on Washington series is a powerful visual testimony, capturing protests that culminated in Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s “I Have a Dream'' speech, delivered at the base of the Lincoln Memorial. Provenance: Freed archive. *** Artist’s Bio: Leonard Freed (1929-2006) was an American photographer from Brooklyn, New York. His "Black in White America" series made him known as a documentarian, a social documentary photographer. Freed worked as a freelance photographer from 1961 onwards and as a Magnum photographer Freed traveled widely abroad and, in the US, photographing African Americans (1964-65), events in Israel (1967-68, 1973), and the New York City police department (1972-79).
