"Along with contemporaries such as Jeff Wall and Sandy Skoglund, Nicosia's work hovers somewhere between fiction and reality: staged scenes shot against backdrops, that — while occasionally bordering on the fantastical — capture real-world struggles and emotions...After living in Santa Fe for 11 years (or 4,108 days, according to Nicosia) he returned to Dallas and embarked on photographing the homes of collectors who had previously purchased his pieces. He captured the works in situ, but added doses of his signature surreality, including small sculptures he made — creatures dubbed dreamboats, humanoid figures, Cubist-esque faces, and ravens (an homage to the birds he spied daily in Santa Fe) — placed in the scenes, often interacting with existing objects." - Dallas Morning News This black and white fine art photography series by Nic Nicosia explores the installation of his previous photography works in the Mid Century Modern style homes of some of Nicosia's most noteworthy collectors. Edition 1 of 3. Nic Nicosia was born in 1951 in Dallas, TX and currently lives and works in Dallas, TX. He has exhibited his staged photographs internationally since 1980 and has been selected for the Whitney Biennials of 1983 and 2000, The Guggenheim Exxon Show in 1983 and Documenta IV, 1992. His work is included in the permanent collections of the Museum of Modern Art in New York, the Guggenheim, the Whitney, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, the Museum of Contemporary Art in Chicago, the Art Gallery of Ontario, the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, The Houston Museum of Fine Art, and the Dallas Museum of Art, to mention a few. In 1979 a 20-year retrospective of Nic’s work was shown at the Contemporary Arts Museum of Houston and traveled to several venues. CASA in Salamanca, Spain also mounted a retrospective in 2003 and both originating museums produced comprehensive catalogs. Nic received a Louis Comfort Tiffany Foundation Grant in 1984, Awards in the Visual Arts – AVA 11 in 1991, The Tesuque Foundation – Artist Fellowship Grant in 1998, and a Guggenheim Fellowship in 2010. The University of Texas Press produced a major career retrospective, Nic Nicosia, released in October of 2012. The book includes over 160 images and film stills from 1980 through 2011.
