Many years ago, the exceptional work of British photographer Tim Flach, drew my attention to the hot springs of Myvatn in the north of Iceland. This remote area is geologically angry and in deep winter it is fairly inhospitable, but in the summer, it becomes something of a tourist resort for the local Icelandics and all too crowded for how we operate. We would always choose inhospitable over crowded. I have filmed here in the winter in the past, but struggled to do justice to the uniquely raw ecosystem. As always there is an element of knowing how to get it right by initially getting it hopelessly wrong. In particular, this is not a safe place without engaging locals, because the ground underneath, much like Yellowstone in Wyoming, is not to be taken for granted. To be brave and work close to the geysers needs permits and guides. But in 2022, we finally had our rewards. The weather plays such a big role in the field; no more so than up here at 66 degrees north where the Norse Gods granted my wish for strong winds and good light. It was the wind that amplified the trail of steam and allowed me to work a comfortable distance from the source without losing the effect. It was then up to me to work the strong late afternoon light to the best of my advantage. The end result is a strong image and certainly authentic. In my deliberations as to how to tell a Nantucket story, there were some key asso-ciations of the island that I knew I needed to incorporate. One was always going to be its storied maritime past, and in particular its leading position in the whaling industry. Then there are certain features on the island that if included in an image would reinforce a sense of place - such as Nantucket Grey buildings and of course the lighthouses. But in our production meetings in the run up to the assignment, there was one feature I kept on requesting that we prioritised - the cobbled streets. The “Still Live” photographs” are a manifesto of slowness, of the pleasure of observation, of recovery of reflection. Giangiacomo Rocco di Torrepadula takes an everyday object from his household, one that appears to no longer be useful because it is old, broken or only kept for its sentimental value. He places it in a space and makes use of his monorail camera. Before taking the shot, he studies the object calmly, engaging in an intimate dialogue with it until he finds a view that gives it a new life. It is hard to get it right the first time. All the various attempts are measured, calculated, slow. Speed does not belong to the monorail camera. Each attempt is well thought out, then developed in a darkroom and scanned using a special technique to bring out the image. It can take several days to get the right result. But these are days that have the pleasure of slowly rediscovering a past that you somehow manage to reclaim. Here, we are a long way away from the execution speed typical of digital and even further away from the frenetic exploitation of images on social media. The result is an image that erupts with its wealth of detail, which is especially explosive when printed in large format. The object becomes seductive, often turning into something else entirely, that may not be immediately perceptible. The perspective, the details, the light, all stimulate the observer to actively participate in this new vision. Far from being a nostalgic interpretation, the work leads the viewer to investigate the form, to pause, to observe the details, to get lost in the haziness, and in so doing, to regain possession of their time in a gesture of profound observation.
