About the Item

In the monster´s cave (Journey to the Center of the Earth) - 2019 60x50cm, Edition of 10. Photograph printed in Canson Barita Fiber Rag 340gr, based on a reclaimed Fuji Instant Film Negative (not mounted). Signed on back with Certificate. Cristina started her project Journey to the Center of the Earth in July 2019 during a familly travel around caves and ancient forest in the Vasc Country in the North of Spain. It is an imaginery journey in the search for MARI, the main deity of Basque mythology. She is the manifestation of the divinized forces of nature. All beings and natural cycles are the different expressions of Mari. She is the whole nature, queen of the three kingdoms, mineral, vegetable and animal and the four elements: earth, air, water and fire. The pictures were taken with Polaroid peel apart film and then stored in a box. Cristina started working with the negatives during the Covid-19 confinement. At the same time she was reading the works by Jules Verne with her eleven year old daughter, to travel to another imaginary world. I am interested in the narrative sense of photography, that frozen moment that allows an ambiguous narrative. That intermediate moment which gives place to the spectator to create his own story, to compose his own mental images, recreating a separate sphere constructed in between a shared reality and an imaginary world.
