Edward L. Rubin is an award-winning fine art photographer, a film and television production designer, and a fine art painter. He lives in his hometown of Los Angeles, studied architecture at the University of California, Berkeley, and holds a Master of Fine Arts degree in Set Design for theatre from Carnegie-Mellon University. He also attended the Academie de Port Royal in Paris, France, where he studied drawing and painting. Edward’s fine art photographs have been shown in galleries throughout the United States and in Europe. His work has been published in the New York Review of Books, and Photographer’s Forum Magazine’s annual BEST OF PHOTOGRAPHY (2010-2018). His photographs have been exhibited in over eighty international competitions including the 3RD INTERNATIONAL BIENNIAL OF PHOTOGRAPHY in Malaga, Spain, and the 5TH INTERNATIONAL BIENNIAL OF PHOTOGRAPHY in Barcelona. He has won First Place in multiple categories in the INTERNATIONAL POLLUX AWARDS many times. His photography book, VERMONT-AN INSIDER’S OUTSIDE VIEW, captures the character and spirit of the people who inhabit Vermont accompanied by images of the land and the special places that shape their lives. He worked on it for four and a half years. It was short listed in the 2016 INTERNATIONAL RUBERY BOOK AWARDS (United Kingdom) and it also won the 2017 INDEPENDENT PUBLISHERS BOOK AWARD GOLD MEDAL–US Northeast Region Non-Fiction, and the 2016 INDEPENDENT PUBLISHERS OF NEW ENGLAND BOOK AWARD. Edward has six Emmy Award nominations for Art Direction and has won the Emmy for Disney’s CINDERELLA, starring Whitney Houston and Brandy. Other art direction Emmy nominations include AMERICAN HORROR STORY (seasons 1 and 2), RETURN TO HALLOWEENTOWN (Disney), ANDERSONVILLE (Turner Television Network), and ANNIE (Disney). He has also been nominated five times for the Excellence in Production Design Award from the Hollywood Art Directors Guild and won the award for CINDERELLA. He has worked on over 60 productions, either in Hollywood or on location. Edward has also taught Production Design for Film and Television at the Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising (FIDM) in Los Angeles. Edward’s soft pastel paintings have been exhibited in galleries in San Francisco, Napa Valley, and Los Angeles. His painting, THE ANNUNCIATION, won First Place, pastel category, in THE ARTISTS'S MAGAZINE'S 2013 All Media Competition. It was also featured in THE PASTEL JOURNAL as part of the 11th Annual Pastel 100 Competition 2010. Many of Edward’s paintings are based on the actors and costumed extras he encounters during his film projects. He has recently completed 56 black and white drawings of New York City. Edward has been married to his husband, poet Sam Ambler, for thirty-two years. He also swims. A lot.
