2013

About the Item

Self Touches #01, 2013 by Koray Erkaya From the series of Self Touches Hahnemühle Fine Art Baryta Paper Image size: 16 in. H x 24 in. W (40 cm H x 60 cm W) Edition of 7 All about narcissism. The series, which he started during the exhibition of the Don't Tell Mama photography series at the European Nu Photo Festival (Europeen de la Photo de NU) held in Arles in Southern France in 2011, sometimes meets the beauty queens of different countries, the favorite models of agencies or the beauties working in a cafe in Arles. He continued, starting with the waitress. Sometimes the place was vast, full of innocent daisies, sometimes it was as natural as an old train station, sometimes it was as fictional as the sets surrounded by mirrors on all four sides that Erkaya had prepared in her own place. The girls were blonde, brunette, short or long hair. Soft looks, hair thrown to the wind were met with the harshest sexual messages. Simplicity and naturalness were exposed to lips with blue lipstick, hair with extended blonde curls. The vagina form found its place in each photo, without shouting. All of the models confront themselves, with their twin images. They were contradicting each other. They were all trying to explain the difference within themselves without revealing it to us. They passed through the moment and were captured by the camera with twin images. it's done, it’s over. _____________________ Koray Erkaya, born in Turkey in 1964, is a photographer and author based in Toronto, Canada. He began his career working as a fashion and advertising photographer for magazines, advertising agencies and clients. In May 2010, he was invited as an honored guest to take part in a photo exhibition in the “Festival Europeen de la photo de Nu” with the “Don’t Tell Mamma” series. After 2010, he became more interested in fine art photography and started to work on themed projects that he creates through nude photography. After the silent and peaceful protest in Istanbul Gezi Park in 2013, he prepared the photography exhibition “Invacuo” emphasizing the heavy use of tear gas on innocent protestors. The book with the same name was published in the same year. He has opened 7 solo and 34 combined exhibitions worldwide. Among his well-known series are: Don’t Tell Mama, Self Touches, Invacuo and TooLess. Now, he focuses on creating installations such as special 3D frames and infinity mirror installations. He is a member of AIAP (Association International des Arts Plastique) and accredited photographer from PPOC (Professional Photographers of Canada).

  • Burned II (Self Portrait) - Polaroid, Contemporary, 21st Century, Portrait
    By Stefanie Schneider
    Located in Morongo Valley, CA
Burned II (Self Portrait), 1999 Edition of 1/10, 40x40cm Print on Velvet Watercolor, 310gsm, No OBAs, Bright White, Acid Free based on an original Polaroid. Signature label and Certificate. Not mounted. Artist Inventory No 311.01. A German view of the American West The works of Stefanie Schneider evoke Ed Ruscha's obsession with the American experience, the richness of Georgia O'Keefe's deserts and the loneliness of Edward Hopper's haunting paintings. So how exactly did this German photographer become one of the most important artists of the American narrative of the 20th and 21st century? Born in Germany in 1968, photographer Schneider divides her time between Berlin and Los Angeles. Her process begins in the American West, in locations such as the planes and deserts of Southern California, where she photographs her subjects. In Berlin, Schneider develops and enlarges her works by hand. What is initially most striking about Schneider's images is the color of her Polaroid film but her role in preserving the use of Polaroid film is one aspect of her work that has gained great respect from her contemporaries and the critics, as her work came about during a time when the Polaroid, a symbol of American photography, was on the road to extinction. This theme of preservation and deterioration is a core part of Schneider's oeuvre. In an interview in October 2014 with Artnet, the artist explained how her own experiences of pain and loss inspire her. ''My work resembles my life: Love, lost and unrequited, leaves its mark in our lives as a senseless pain that has no place in the present.'' ''The ex-lover experiences the residues of love as an amputee experiences the sensation of a ghost limb.'' - Stefanie Schneider Schneider's subjects are often featured in apocalyptic settings: desert planes, trailer parks, oilfields, run-down motels and empty beaches, alone, or if not, not connected with one another. ''It is the tangible experience of ''absence'' that has inspired my work'', explained Schneider. Barnebys, May 3rd, 2017 Stefanie Schneider is a contemporary German photographer and film artist. Her work is characterized by its uniform formal aesthetic and its faded imagery, which she produces through the chemical deterioration of expired film. Schneider’s focus is on the exclusive depiction of young women living in California, clothed in retro dress and evoking nostalgic home photography or vintage film stills...
