Marco Breuer
Untitled (C-1007)

2010

About the Item

Breuer has consistently challenged the conventions of photography by rejecting the use of camera, film and negative in favor of interacting directly with material. Eschewing conventional means, Breuer subjects photographic paper to various forms of manipulation by hand. By folding, scoring, burning, scouring, biting, or striking the paper, the artist's process coaxes a vivid range of colors and textures from his materials. Breuer also employs unusual light sources including lit alcohol, burning bomb fuse and vintage flashbulbs. The results of his investigations are abstract, complex, one-of-a-kind photographs that negotiate the illusionistic space of photography versus the concrete space of the physical mark.
