2024

About the Item

When the cinematic Bond was born. The most complete account of the making of the first James Bond film, Dr. No (1962). “Bond, James Bond.” Since Sean Connery uttered those immortal words in Dr. No, the world’s most famous secret agent in the history of cinema has been charming and thrilling audiences worldwide. This fearless, peerless and impeccably British character, created in 1953 by Ian Fleming, has starred in twenty-five EON-produced films, played by six different actors over seven decades. And still the franchise continues. To tell the full story of how it all began, EON Productions opened its archives of photos, designs, and production materials to TASCHEN. The result is this remarkable account of the making of Dr. No, Bond’s first film outing: a beautiful volume that includes a treasure trove of words and pictures, many of which have never been seen before. Access to EON’s James Bond archives was completely unrestricted, so this book is the most comprehensive account of one of the most iconic films the world has ever seen. Step inside the pages to find the true inside story and outstanding insights into the personalities and processes behind the most successful and longest-running film franchise in cinema history. You can closely follow the making of the film through a day-by-day account of what took place, which scenes were shot and who made the decisions that shaped the story and characters as it was filmed. Among the 1007 images, you’ll see many rare and previously unpublished stills and on-set shots from photographers such as Bert Cann, Bunny Yaeger and Bradley Smith, as well as memos, documents, posters, and production designs. And the behind-the-scenes stories paint their own pictures too, told by the people who were there. From producers Albert R. "Cubby" Broccoli and Harry Saltzman to director Terence Young and production designer Ken Adam, as well as the cast, the crew, writers and stuntmen, these personal narratives invite readers back in time and on to the film set itself. For any fan, it’s a fantastic insight into how the Bond cinematic world was born – and its comprehensive coverage of the filming experience which will grip you from the first page. Art Edition (No. 251–500), with the framed ChromaLuxe print Publicity Portrait, 1962 after Bert Cann. Ian Fleming described James Bond as a blunt instrument wielded by a Government Department, which is epitomised in this studio portrait of Sean Connery taken on April 5, 1962. Dye sublimation print on ChromaLuxe aluminum panel with floating frame, ready to hang, 21.3 x 21.3 in.; Hardcover in slipcase, 11.4 x 17.3 in., 13.19 lb, 492 pages. Also available in an alternative limited Art Edition (No. 1–250) with the framed ChromaLuxe print Bond, James Bond, 1962 by Bert Cann.

  • Whoopi Goldberg, California, 1984 Signed, Framed, ChromaLuxe aluminium Print
    By Annie Leibovitz
    Located in Los Angeles, CA
Art Edition “Whoopi Goldberg” (No. 1–450). Hardcover volume in a slipcase, accompanied by the portrait Whoopi Goldberg, Berkeley, California, 1984. For over 50 years, Annie Leibovitz has been creating a body of work that is unequaled in breadth and influence. From the viscerally immediate reportage made for Rolling Stone magazine in the 1970s and extending through the more stylized portraiture of her work for Vanity Fair and Vogue, her pictures make up what is essentially a family album of our time. In 2014, in close collaboration with Annie, TASCHEN published a SUMO edition of her work: over 200 photographs, many of them famous (the naked John Lennon entwined in a last embrace with Yoko Ono, Patti Smith on fire) and some rarely, if ever, seen before. In 2022, to accommodate a wider audience, this volume was recreated as an unlimited XXL edition. The XXL volume is now available as an Art Edition in four different versions, each accompanied by a signed, numbered and framed dye-sublimation ChromaLuxe aluminum print. Whoopi Goldberg, Berkeley, California, 1984 is included in an edition of 450 copies. Annie’s most well-known portraits are based on ideas that come from studying the subject’s work. “It didn’t have to be a big idea,” Annie says. “It could be simple. There’s a case to be made that the simpler idea the better.” The Whoopi Goldberg portrait is based on a character in Whoopi’s one-woman show, which in early 1984 was playing at a small downtown club in New York. The character is a little African-American girl...

  • Otherworldly lovers, immobilised in marble, Dancing in blooming Garden
    Located in London, GB
Handcoloured portrait of otherworldly lovers, immobilised in marble, dancing in blooming meadows. A whimsical tale of adoration, Ursa and her spiritual partner take visual cues from Titania and Bottom in Dieterle and Reinhartd’s 1936 interpretation of A Midsummer Nights Dream. Taken from The Sialia Marbles, a series of portraits containing ephemeral human sculptures taken between 2016-19. Together these works act as tales contained in a fictional sculpture hall, in direct reaction to Andre Malraux’s 1947 Le Musee Imaginaire (Museum Without Walls). Original title: URSA LOVES YOU, 2017 Hand-coloured Archival Pigment Print on Hahnemuhle Photorag 40.5 x 30.5 cm Unique Series: The Sialia Marbles Signed and dated on verso "I’m not a sculptor, but I wanted to construct my own stories. Photographers have often used sculpture in order to challenge our idea of a “sculptural” body or object, by casting them in a two-dimensional light. I love playing with perception. A lot of my work is influenced by the nineteenth century—the pictorialist movement for instance. When photography was a new experiment, people would play around with perception tricks—Victorian paper theaters...
