"I knew months in advance that I was going to take her portrait. And for months, I'd just sit there and think ‘what will go wrong’ – camera, film, lighting – I ran it over and over in my head, night after night. She knows more about how to take a picture than anyone else. I was a bit nervous – how could you not be? But when she walks in a room – you are immediately at ease. She is the most photographed person in the world. I was trying really hard to make her smile, so I told her a racing joke"
Terry O'Neill (born 1938; London, UK) is an English photographer. He gained renown documenting the fashions, styles, and celebrities of the 1960s. O'Neill's photographs display his knack for capturing his subjects candidly or in unconventional settings. His work has also been featured in numerous exhibitions. He was awarded The Royal Photographic Society's Centenary medal 'in recognition of a sustained, significant contribution to the art of photography' in 2011.
