Abandoning traditional photography, in his hands the camera becomes a liberating, experimental tool that incorporates mixed media, text, assemblage, photograms, and the altering and combining of negatives. Thomas Barrow is Professor Emeritus of Photography at the University of New Mexico. His photographs are in the permanent collections of the George Eastman House, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, the Museum of Photographic Arts, the Center for Creative Photography at the University of Arizona, Tucson, where his archive is also housed, and other major public and private collections. Thomas Barrow, who was born in Kansas City, Missouri, studied with Aaron Siskind at the Art Institute of Design, Chicago, and graduated with an M.A. in graphic design in 1967. He also studied film with Jack Ellis at Northwestern University. At the George Eastman House, he was Curator of Exhibitions in 1965, Assistant Director from 1971-1972, and became editor of Image in 1972. The Associate Director of the University Art Museum, University of New Mexico, from 1973-1976, Barrow began teaching photography in the Art Department in 1976 and was Acting Director of the University Art Museum in 1985. He has received two NEA Photographers Fellowships (1973; 1978) and is also a publication designer. Barrow has produced a series of silver-gelatin photograms and then applied spray paint to the prints. These combine the feeling of a split-toned black and white print and at the same time appear as color-print photograms. He has produced a series of photograms entitled Disjunctive Forms. His images appear as surreal assemblages of various found and created objects superimposed with stencil text. Barrow works in the “academic” tradition—his pictures are deliberately and consistently experimental, highly intellectualized, scholarly in their concerns, and chock-full of references to the work of other artists.
