Rocket Man, Dungeness, Kent, 1979 / Howard Jones - Crossed That Line 1989

1979

About the Item

“It was shot on a grey misty day on Dungeness Beach in Sussex. Charlie Wood lit the sky rocket and stood to attention, and I fired the flashgun that was stuffed into his trousers to give the illusion of an explosion. The cable to the flashgun was hidden under the pebbles. (...) I did get to use the sky rocket shot many years later. Howard Jones saw it and used it for the cover of his Cross that Line album ten years later...” Other side of the story and the photograph is: While working for British Steel, Griffin was involved with the construction of nuclear power stations. He later became a staunch believer in the campaign for nuclear disarmament and this photograph - taken on the beach adjacent to Dungeness Nuclear Power Station - conveyed his regret at the part he had once played in the nuclear game. He was famous for his ground-breaking approach to portraiture from Iggy Pop to Kate Bush, and numerous high profile projects stretching from 'Work' in the 1980's to his project charting 'The Road to 2012', commissioned by the National Portrait Gallery. 'Work' went on to be awarded the Best Photography book in the World at the Barcelona Primavera Fotografica 1991 and The Life magazine used the photograph "A Broken Frame" on its front cover of a special supplement "The Greatest Photographs Of The 80's". Throughout his career, over twenty monographs of Griffin's work have been published, his work has been the subject of over fifty international solo exhibitions and is held in institutional collections including the Victoria & Albert Museum, London; the Arts Council of Great Britain, London; the British Council, London; the National Portrait Gallery, London; the Museum Folkwang, Essen; the Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery; the Art Museum Reykjavík, Iceland; the Mast Foundation, Bologna; and the Museu da Imagem, Braga, Portugal. In 2009, Brian Griffin became the patron of FORMAT Festival and in 2013 he received the Centenary Medal from the Royal Photographic Society in recognition of a lifetime achievement in photography, and the following year he received an honorary doctorate from Birmingham City University for his lifetime contribution to his home city. "I think that Brian is one of the most interesting portrait photographers ever. His portrait photography belongs to another time. Portrait photography today is like so simple, so straightforward, so it seems that all photography portraits are alike. Brian is different and Brian has a craziness in him - a craziness in a way to see the world, and intensity that belongs only to him." Francois Hébel, Director, Fondation Henri Cartier-Bresson (present), Director, Les Rencontres d'Arles (1986-1987, 2001-2014), in the documentary by Michael Prince; The Surreal Lives of Brian Griffin, 2018 This framed print has been exhibited in numerous shows and previous edition of Rocket Man are held in many private art and photography collections. Shipping: Overseas shipping - the framed print will be crated for safety. A free delivery in London area.

A camera is a window through which a photographer interacts with the world, and it's up to the operator to decide whether his camera will be a barrier or a mirror between he and his subjects. In the 1970s, Michael Abramson chose the latter path when he brought his camera to Pepper's Hideout on Chicago's South Side. Following in the footsteps of his acknowledged influence Gyula Halász, a Hungarian photographer better known as Brassaï who became the pre-eminent chronicler of the Paris nightlife he loved so much, Abramson initiated himself into the nightlife of Chicago's predominantly black neighbourhoods. He was very much a part of the scene he documented on film, drinking, laughing, and dancing with his subjects into small hours and becoming as much a part of the atmosphere as the locals who frequented the same nightspots he did. - Joe Tangari (Numero Group, 2009) This series won Abramson a grant from the National Endowment for the Arts in 1978 and launched his career as a photojournalist. Eventually the project resulted in a hardbound book, Light: On the South Side, including the Grammy and Mojo nominated album, featuring Chicago blues...

Later on, she moved to New York to further develop her career as a photographer and enrolled in classes at the Photography Department of the New York Film Academy. Mizrakli has conducted many shooting sessions for Mica Studios and Bullet Magazine in New York and had two solo exhibitions in Los Angeles. She has recently participated in the Contemporary Istanbul Exhibition (November 2013). In some of her black and white works she uses the human body only as a pictorial sign in order to create almost abstract works. First made anonymous, the female model is then cloned and circularly multiplied. The result is a kind of wheel in which the repeated human body gives birth to a new, seemingly vegetal or mineral structure. Thus, the human element seems to be transformed into different other natural...
