PALMER SERIES: UltraChrome Print 2011-Current “Once the hand took hold of the pen, something miraculous occurred: the body, which did not cease writing itself, left strangely unavoidable traces.” (Fredrich Kittler, Gramophone, Film Typewriter) Revealing pressure and pause, ink describes a drawing and words, each tethered to the writer; words silently voicing language, the drawing spinning out the skill, diligence, and standing of its author. Another drawing builds, unintended, like the sound of a crowd, as the author’s damp words and signatures seep over and over into a blotter, a palimpsest of all messages. ARTIST STATEMENT On a scale from the mundane to the spectacular I prefer to work on the left, where the unforeseen tends to pop up. Here’s how it often happens: in a given light, something attracts me, suggesting that a photo is possible. I can put that something in the periphery of my attention, for it will be there (although if it is moving I have less time). Next, I scan the scene forensically and emotionally to see what narrative or other connections, and relationships are discernable. That done, I position myself to exclude the inessential while ordering static and any moving elements to create the most compelling arrangement. Much more quickly done than said. Arrangement/structure accomplishes a couple of things. First, it creates within the photograph’s borders a kinesthetic web of tension, sometimes stabilizing, sometimes not. For an analogy, I look to dance or jazz. Second, when it works, it tends to regulate the time and sequence in which the elements shown will be seen and experienced. Photography, after all, is simply a process of transmitting data as experience. My criteria for the exhibition are my extended involvement and perceived linkages within and among bodies of work. My groupings aim toward visual coherence while avoiding redundancy. Simply, when voting among a handful of equally favored images, if one contains a formal or thematic element found elsewhere, it will likely be elected. Overall, I’m trying to find and display connective tissue that might lead me to some kind of unified field theory about myself and the world before my camera. The outcome will also be measured by the degree to which the viewer will see and intuit this, and if my photographs will inhabit their mental and visual world when they leave the gallery or book. BIOGRAPHY After a degree in Theater at UC Davis, Freund earned an MFA in Photography from the Visual Studies Workshop in Rochester, NY. Currently, he is a Professor Emeritus of Photography at Ramapo College of New Jersey, where he chaired its Visual Arts program for twenty years. He also taught at Pratt Institute and was a Dayton-Hudson Distinguished Visiting Professor at Carleton College. His photographs created for a National Endowment for the Arts grant showed gas station environments in 47 states. Other grants include New York’s Creative Arts Public Service program and NYC’s Institute for Art and Urban Resources. In Syracuse for a Light Works fellowship, Freund curated an exhibition of regional photo postcards and authored a catalog, Penny Publishing. His work has been exhibited at Light Gallery in New York, MoMA P.S. 1, and the George Eastman House. His most recent show, in 2017, was at the Lipani Gallery, Fordham University, NYC. Among collections with his work is the Museum of Modern Art, New York, the Corcoran Gallery of Art, Washington, the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, and the Bibliotheque Nationale. He has served as a photo consultant for the CAPS program, and three times as a photography judge for the Fulbright-Hays Scholarships. At the Society for Photographic Education Freund has presented work, participated on panels, chaired committees, and was on its Board of Directors. In 2011, he presented a paper, Homemade Visual Albums at the Observatory in Brooklyn, NY, followed by an article on that topic, Personal Visual Albums, which appeared in the January 2012 issue of the Ephemera Journal. He is presently on the Board of Directors of the Ephemera Society of America.
