David Sokosh
Linguist (Salacious Tin Type Photo of Male Nude Licking an Ice Pop, blindfolded)

2012

About the Item

Suggestive Contemporary Tin Type Photograph of Male Nude by David Sokosh Wet plate collodion on aluminum, unique 12 x 9 inch aluminum plate, 21 x 17 x 1 inches, contemporary black frame, black mat board, AR Non Reflective Glass Wire backing, ready to hang Originally part of a series the artist deemed "Sin Types", this is a wonderfully suggestive photograph of a male nude, posing blindfolded and licking a Popsicle. His head is propped up by a stand used to relieve models posing for portraits. The artist uses a Victorian camera to capture images directly on aluminum using the 19th century wet plate collodion photographic process. The coloration leans towards sepia toned as opposed to a high contrast, stark black and white coloring. While evocative, the image is innocent enough for just about anyone... More about the work: The self-proclaimed “geeky scientist”, David Sokosh, has long held a fascination with vintage technologies and aesthetics. In addition to his other interests (clock-making, vintage car rebuilding) it’s no surprise that Sokosh favors the 19th century photographic process of Wet Plate Collodion in his own image making. Sokosh uses an authentic Victorian lens fitted to a handmade camera to photograph staged scenes in a daylight studio in Claverack, NY. His tintypes are a far cry from geeky; sophisticated still-lifes are mixed with contemporary (and sexy) subject matter. But no matter the contents, each photograph is veiled with the illusion of time past. All plates are unique, however, he occasionally will photograph the same subject several times to mimic multiples. The selection on view in this exhibit brings together imagery of the living and the mythical in a century old time-hop. Artist Statement: In the era of digital photography and mural-sized color enlargements, I am part of the renaissance in hand-crafted photography, on an intimate scale. Using the mid-nineteenth century technique of Wet Plate Collodion, I create unique photographic pieces on metal, which are sometimes presented as objects, to be held in the hand. In our world of digital, mass-produced, photography, I am drawn to the hand-crafted, one-of-a-kind nature of these photographs. I’m a post-industrial person, living in a self-created pre-modern world full of period objects of all kinds. This authentic process lets me explore the mindset of the early photographer/scientist/collector. I’m drawn to the quality of photograph-as-object that Wet-Plate yields, and excited by the hands-on aspect of the process. I see the limits of this technology (large, heavy equipment and long exposure times) as a challenge rather than a hindrance. The images explore the photographer's collecting obsessions. From casts of ancient sculpture through natural history materials to vintage clothing worn by friends who stop by the studio, these photographs provide a glimpse into my world.
