About the Item

30X26 with Mat. (20X24 inch polaroid) From The New York Times: Dennis Farber abducts children from photographic illustrations in children's books of the 30's. He paints Ku Klux Klan costumes on some toddlers at a birthday party, as if he could see their character and future by the light of the birthday candles. In "Alice's Tea Party," two girls and a stuffed bunny enjoy tea, but the girls' faces have been obliterated, and it is no longer clear what one child is giving the rabbit. Alice doesn't live here anymore; her body is at home but her identity has been bleached away, leaving us vaguely anxious. In "Radiant Child," a child on the beach disappears in a bright blaze of white, pale pink and scratchy crosshatching; what remains is a kind of apotheosis with hair, clutching a plastic pail and shovel. Mr. Farber makes what amounts to counter-photographs, which cancel the indisputable presence of the subject before the lens, the actual trace of reality on film. Here reality is in the process of melting. These images also gently overthrow our common understanding that the body can be pictured but the spirit cannot, and they upset the human certainty that childhood recedes and only photographs keep it alive. What would we do for nostalgia if photographs did not preserve our lost youth and dead acquaintances? Dennis H. Farber (born 1946) is an American painter and photographer. He received a BA from Trinity College (Hartford, Connecticut) in 1968 and an MFA from Claremont Graduate University (Claremont, California) in 1975. He has taught at both the University of New Mexico and the Maryland Institute College of Art. Farber's photographs run the gamut from street photography to manipulated images that are virtually abstract. Most of his paintings are completely abstract, such as The Death of President Coolidge in the collection of the Honolulu Museum of Art. The Baltimore Museum of Art, the Brooklyn Museum, the Carnegie Museum of Art (Pittsburgh), the Center for Creative Photography (Tucson, Arizona), the Columbus Museum of Art (Columbus, Ohio), the Corcoran Gallery of Art (Washington, DC), the Honolulu Museum of Art, the International Center of Photography (New York City), the Jewish Museum (New York City), the Long Beach Museum of Art (Long Beach, California), the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, the Museum of Modern Art (New York City), the Museum of New Mexico (Santa Fe), the Orange County Museum of Art (Newport Beach, California), and the Tokyo Metropolitan Museum of Photography, they are among the public collections holding work by Dennis Farber.

BIRNEY IMES, Mississippi, b. 1951 "Riverside Lounge, Shaw, 1986" Dimensions: Chromogenic print, 14" x 16.5" sight. Framed 21" x 25". Birney Imes (born 1951) is an American photographer. He is best known for his photographs of the American South, especially his home state of Mississippi. His work is exhibited in museums across the United States. Birney Imes III was born in 1951 in Columbus, Mississippi. His father, Vinton Birney Imes, Jr., owned the town newspaper, The Commercial Dispatch. His mother is Nancy McClanahan Imes. He attended desegregated public schools in Columbus and graduated from the University of Tennessee at Knoxville with a Bachelor of Arts degree in History in 1973. Growing up white in the South during the Civil Rights Movement helped shape his views on history and that is where his photography career originated from. Imes began photographing after graduation from college and is largely self-taught. In the mid-70s, he worked as a photographer for his family's newspaper in his hometown of Columbus. Later, he opened his own studio above the Princess Theater in Columbus. Along with his personal work, Imes shot commercial work for local clients and took assignments for magazines like Rolling Stone, The Village Voice and Texas Monthly. His work has been printed in both black and white silver gelatin and color photos. Birney Imes’ photography takes viewers inside pool halls, jazz spots, juke joints and dilapidated restaurants scattered across that rural Mississippi landscape. Drawing inspiration from the photographs of other Southern artists...
